Oy FloriDUH!

Although we covered a lot of news on the show today, we were earily consumed by one particularly engrossing story, that of Florida Congressman Joe Garcia who was earnestly engaged in the House Judiciary Committee's hearing on the government's surveillance programs. This sad display was not the only reason we pulled out the Oy FloriDUH fanfare today. Oh no. And the other story isn't nearly as amusing... First, a bit of background. Earlier this week, a new report courtesy of NASA told us what most of us already suspected: a rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears [...]

Protect Your Media

As I was preparing myself to hit the air this morning and hold myself together in the wake of losing my loving dog Sasha yesterday, I was hit with more bad news... Clear Channel is killing yet another of the remaining handful of progressive talk stations. This time, it's Denver's AM760 that's headed for slaughter. Back in October, I guest hosted the Gloria Neal Show - their local morning program. Glo informed her listeners of her show's demise and the planned format change this morning via Facebook: Gloria Neal 15 hours ago near Denver, CO If you know me, you know [...]

Lessons Learned

Today on the show, we discussed the lessons we've learned thanks to the government's reactions to two completely different protest strategies. As the brilliant cartoon posted above shows, the nutjobs with guns get all the media attention, while the peaceful protesters demanding that we do something to insure the planet will still be inhabitable by humans when our grandchildren come of age are ignored. But that's the smaller lesson learned here. We also now know, thanks to actual events, that peaceful, nonviolent practitioners of civil disobedience as a means of protest against a corrupt system that reward the criminals and [...]

So Much for that Separation of Church & State (5-6-14)

Yesterday's Supreme Court ruling allowing explicitly Christian prayers to open town council meetings across America struck a blow right down the line separating church and state, further taking America back to the days before the Declaration of Independence. The Republican Regressive Party won't be satisfied until we are ruled by the church, and once again belong to the flat-earth society. Today, the White House released the most comprehensive study on climate change ever, and the Regressives are, once again, denying science.  Just take a look at the four geniuses Republicans vying for their party's nomination today to run against Sen. Kay [...]

Saving the Planet – And Ourselves (04/22/2014)

It's Earth Day, and the prognosis for our planet isn't great. We've passed 400 parts per million of carbon in the atmosphere, high above the 350 ppm from which 350.org took its name - signifying the maximum levels we can sustain if life is to survive on earth. As Dr. James Hanson,  former head of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. and one of the most respected climatologists in the world, said of our situation: “If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that [...]

Colbert, Christie, Climate & Christian Hypocrisy

(Ed note: I know the image above is not of a cow. It was the perfect image for today's show, where nothing is as it should be. Welcome to Opposite World, Bizarro World, or the world where a cow looks like a horse.) Let's begin with Colbert. Last week, Stephen Colbert showed what real satire is, and the right wing nuts in this country proved they haven't got a clue. Colbert pointed out the complete insincerity and blatant racism of Dan Snyder, the guy who owns the NFL team based in Washington DC, with this bit (starts at the 8:31 [...]

The FloriDUH files

A jury in FloriDUH found the killer of Jordan Davis guilty of the attempted murder of the three teens he didn't kill when he shot 10 rounds into the SUV that was playing loud music, but couldn't come to a verdict on the murder charge against him for actually killing Jordan Davis. In honor of Jordan Davis, Trayvon Martin and the other innocent victims of "Stand Your Ground" whose names we don't know, I give you this song from Patty Griffin: Today is a President's Day double-header... so pardon my brevity, but I'm heading up to Randi Rhodes' studio to [...]

Hate In the Name of God

It's become something of a theme this week...  but it's unavoidable these days.  Let's just consider a few of the day's big stories, shall we? Rafael Cruz (Ted's father), a "Pastor" in the Purifying Fire Ministries of Carrollton, Texas, though I can't find any information about that particular "church" online), has some some truly hateful things including this, this and this. Here's his latest, proclaiming atheism leads to child molestation and perversity: Then there's word salad Sarah, the former half-term governor of Alaska, who is worried that the Pope is too liberal. And Pat Robertson, a man who claims to have [...]

Channeling My Inner Howard Beale

That's who I felt like today, ranting and raving about the madness that's taken over, seemingly, EVERYTHING! From the bullshit about Benghazi, to the wrong outrage over the IRS, to Apple and others dodging their taxes, to cutting programs for the neediest among us, to the epidemic of sexual assault in the military, to the dysfunction in Washington, to the warming of our planet, to the vilification of teachers and civil servants and union members, to wimpy appeasing politicians....  I could continue, but I think you get the idea.  We talked about all of these subjects and more today with [...]
