Oy FloriDUH!

Although we covered a lot of news on the show today, we were earily consumed by one particularly engrossing story, that of Florida Congressman Joe Garcia who was earnestly engaged in the House Judiciary Committee's hearing on the government's surveillance programs. This sad display was not the only reason we pulled out the Oy FloriDUH fanfare today. Oh no. And the other story isn't nearly as amusing... First, a bit of background. Earlier this week, a new report courtesy of NASA told us what most of us already suspected: a rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears [...]

Education Propaganda

Welcome to Education Nation Propaganda Week, complete with its own Hollywood blockbuster! Won't Back Down is the latest offering from the powers that want to kill public education and replace it with a privatized, for-profit system that will not help our kids. NBC's stations are in the midst of their manufactured-news "Education Nation" week which pushes the privatization idea and presents it as if it the idea of moving education into the private sector was the right thing to do (it isn't).  Last night,  I actually saw Rev. Jim Webb is [...]

Cost of War vs. Cost of College

There's a truly remarkable, albeit depressing website. Click on CostofWar. com and you can see, to the second, how much the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are costing us. I can't even post the figure, as it's constantly changing... the counters move faster than the ones at the gas pump. Tonight, I'll chat with a couple of people who've done the math in California.  You probably remember reading about the students in California protesting the rate hikes in the state university system just last month.  Now, Brave New Foundation, University of California Student Leaders, and the Consumer Federation of California [...]
