Download here or click below to play     We survived the final debate of the 2020 presidential election, and will share some of the high and low points of last night's event. I'm thrilled to welcome the Pulitzer Prize winning NY Times columnist NICHOLAS KRISTOF to the show today. He and his wife wrote the book Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope last year. On Monday night at 7ET, the film adaptation of the book debuts on the WORLD Channel and online at worldchannel.org and pbs.org I played a new song by Black Eyed Peas and Jennifer Hudson, produced by [...]

World Gone Mad

As if we needed any more evidence that the world has, indeed, gone mad... Yesterday, ISIS released another video of one of their masked, cowardly, subhuman, heartless, soulless, thug terrorists beheading another American journalist, Steven Sotloff. Today's blog will be short, with just links to the people and stories I spoke with and about today, as I'm not feeling well and the news is making me even sicker... Dean Obeidallah was up first to discuss his latest for The Daily Beast, "It'll Take More Than Bombs to Stop ISIS". (When you're done with that, definitely click over to read, "Stop the [...]

It’s the Economy, Stupid (and the Military Industrial Complex too)

There's no doubt that the spark that lit the fuse in Ferguson was the police shooting of Michael Brown. But you have to wonder how much anger was simmering, how much people were already hurting from decades of building racial tensions and the fact that so many of them are hurting financially. I don't often agree with Chris Matthews, but he hit the nail on the head last night The disturbing cell phone video of the other killing of a black man in Missouri by police bullets, this one on Tuesday, was released yesterday. We were told that this one [...]

Going to Pot

On November 4, Florida may become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana. I certainly never think of FloriDUH as a trend leader and, in this case, we'd be in the middle of the pack. But that's certainly better than dead last or bringing up the rear as is usually the case. On the ballot on election day, Floridians will get to vote yes or no on constitutional amendment 2: Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions. Although many groups and factions got together to make this dream a reality, United for Care led the charge in the petition drive, [...]

It’s a Matter of Life and Death

War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! --Edwin Starr I was hit with a dose of sad reality yesterday during the show when, as I was discussing the sickening situation in Gaza, a long-time regular listener of this show, contributor and participant in the chat room posted in there, "Israeli Jews are Nazis." When I implored him to rethink his over generalization and admit that his hyperbole was overblown, he left the chat room in a huff and quickly stopped his monthly $5 contribution of support for Radio or Not. I emailed him the following: I'm sorry that you [...]

What a Way to End the Week!

If only I could start every weekend like this! I know it's only Thursday, but I don't do a show on Fridays, so my weekend begins when this blog and podcast are posted. Let's begin with the good stuff. Shenna Bellows! The former Executive Director of the  ACLU of Maine turned senatorial candidate is challenging Susan Collins for the seat Collins has occupied for 18 years. She's been making a lot of news in the past few days: Bellows just yesterday submitted many more than enough signatures to get her on November's ballot, earned the endorsements of both the Progressive Change [...]

Back to Reality

I was on vacation last week - and that was the view from my room at the Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort. I was there for a music conference called Sunset Sessions - which I attend whenever I am able. My friend Michele Clark started Sunset Sessions almost 20 years ago as a way to introduce new music and new artists to radio programmers. She'd fly a select group of adventurous radio folk to an exotic location where we'd enjoy great company and incredible music. These days, Michele hosts her annual gatherings in San Diego and, true to form, puts on an [...]

The FloriDUH files

A jury in FloriDUH found the killer of Jordan Davis guilty of the attempted murder of the three teens he didn't kill when he shot 10 rounds into the SUV that was playing loud music, but couldn't come to a verdict on the murder charge against him for actually killing Jordan Davis. In honor of Jordan Davis, Trayvon Martin and the other innocent victims of "Stand Your Ground" whose names we don't know, I give you this song from Patty Griffin: Today is a President's Day double-header... so pardon my brevity, but I'm heading up to Randi Rhodes' studio to [...]

Can We Still Overcome?

The world lost a treasure. Pete Seeger died at the age of 94 after a lifetime of music and activism. He probably didn't always see his actions as activism, but as doing what he thought was right. But we owe him a huge thanks. The NY Times ran a lovely obit today that struck all the right chords. But after I already finished today's show, I read a tweet that alerted me to the best salute to Seeger - Bruce Springsteen's introduction of our global treasure at Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Concert: I started the show today by playing the [...]
