(Ed note: I know the image above is not of a cow. It was the perfect image for today’s show, where nothing is as it should be. Welcome to Opposite World, Bizarro World, or the world where a cow looks like a horse.)
Let’s begin with Colbert. Last week, Stephen Colbert showed what real satire is, and the right wing nuts in this country proved they haven’t got a clue.
Colbert pointed out the complete insincerity and blatant racism of Dan Snyder, the guy who owns the NFL team based in Washington DC, with this bit (starts at the 8:31 mark). Crooks & Liars has a good explanation of the insane criticisms here. I just wonder where was the outrage from Michelle Malkin and the rest of the rwnj when Rush Limbaugh did this:
Hypocrisy much?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – a Nobel Prize winning UN group- issued a new report today, concluding that
ice caps are melting, sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, water supplies are coming under stress, heat waves and heavy rains are intensifying, coral reefs are dying, and fish and many other creatures are migrating toward the poles or in some cases going extinct.
The oceans are rising at a pace that threatens coastal communities and are becoming more acidic as they absorb some of the carbon dioxide given off by cars and power plants, which is killing some creatures or stunting their growth, the report found.
Organic matter frozen in Arctic soils since before civilization began is now melting, allowing it to decay into greenhouse gases that will cause further warming, the scientists said.
And the worst is yet to come, the scientists said in the second of three reports that are expected to carry considerable weight next year as nations try to agree on a new global climate treaty. In particular, the report emphasized that the world’s food supply is at considerable risk — a threat that could have serious consequences for the poorest nations.
Read on, and share it with your Republican friends who are still denying that the planet is warming..
The so-called Christians are basking in their hypocrisy. That’s nothing new, but their latest stunt – in the name of love – is simply sickening. The group Pro-Life Action League not only routinely accosts and harasses women heading to abortion clinics (something they call “sidewalk counseling”), but they’re now distributing “prayer posters” (which to my eye look like “Wanted” posters), outing three women – a “pro-choice journalist, an abortion clinic escort, and an ‘abortionist'”…
I promise you, the people on the receiving end of these images aren’t thinking of praying for them.
Katie Klabusich (on twitter)- a writer, activist, media contributor and clinic escort, joined me on the show this morning to discuss what’s happening here as outlined in the Religious Dispatch article, “For Love or Threat: Pro-Life Prayer Includes Names, Photos of Abortion-Rights Advocates“.
I’ve never met journalist Robin Marty, but she is the co-author of the book, Crow After Roe: How “Separate But Equal” Has Become the New Standard in Women’s Health and How We Can Change That with Jessica Mason Pieklo who was guest on the show last Tuesday, talking about the Hobby Lobby challenge at SCOTUS to the contraception mandate in the ACA.
And the third woman targeted by that poster is Dr. Cheryl Chastine, described by them as an “abortionist.” In fact, Dr. Chastine is not a public figure:
When asked about Dr. Chastine, who does not write publicly about her work and who “ducks down on the floor of
[her] car” on the way to the clinic, he mentioned PLAL outreach to the provider, including the time she received letters at her home from his mother, and Vice President of PLAL, Ann Scheidler. Scheidler confirmed that Chastine had never replied, which, to most, would seem to indicate that the identification of one’s home address when practicing in a historically dangerous profession is a form of harassment rather than a harmless attempt at correspondence.Or, in Scheidler’s view, “She was rather naïve to think she could be this anonymous abortionist coming into Wichita, at George Tiller’s former practice of all places.”
Dr. Chastine’s identity was originally revealed by Troy Newman of Operation Rescue who called her practice pretending to be a journalist—a call during which she explicitly said, “I would like to keep my name off the record because of the crazy people with guns.” So although Scheidler makes a convincing case for his group’s initiative being inspired by compassion and love, it’s of a very unwelcome kind when it comes to Dr. Chastine.
Yes, Dr. Chastine is practicing at an abortion clinic in Wichita, where Dr. George Tiller was murdered for doing the same type of work. Love, my ass.
As for Chris Christie, he was covered in today’s “Fools on the Hill”® segment with Crooks & Liars‘ Nicole Belle:
Shall we make a trip to Bizarro World?
The world in which Rick Santorum can call people who are enrolling through Obamacare “deadbeats”.
The world in which Sen John Barasson—absent any proof, mind you—can go on a news program and accuse the Obama administration of “cooking the books” when confronted with the news that despite the nonstop campaign by the GOP to destroy ACA, there are now 6.5 million enrollees.
The world in which Randy Mastro, the attorney Chris Christie tasked with exonerating him (just as his firm did with Richard Nixon) can reframe the closing of lanes on the GW Bridge as “lane realignment”.
The world in which Chuck Todd wants to know what it will take to believe Chris Christie is innocent.
And Karl Rove—who should be in jail instead of television—can flip out at the suggestion that the Christie investigation is a whitewash.
