The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same

So, we hoped for change... and got more of the same.  Though they tell us the difference is that it was illegal under Bush, but it's all legal under Obama. Somehow that doesn't comfort me when I realize that the only amendment left standing in the Bill of Rights is the Second, which has been widely misinterpreted to ignore the words "well regulated" and "militia". On today's show, I finished the week discussing all of the revelations, attacks, back-asswards reasoning from Obama supporters and fake indignation from his attackers on the right, lies and excuses and more with Absurdity Today's [...]

Channeling My Inner Howard Beale

That's who I felt like today, ranting and raving about the madness that's taken over, seemingly, EVERYTHING! From the bullshit about Benghazi, to the wrong outrage over the IRS, to Apple and others dodging their taxes, to cutting programs for the neediest among us, to the epidemic of sexual assault in the military, to the dysfunction in Washington, to the warming of our planet, to the vilification of teachers and civil servants and union members, to wimpy appeasing politicians....  I could continue, but I think you get the idea.  We talked about all of these subjects and more today with [...]

Voting Rights…Or Not

Welcome to democracy's nightmare.  Today, it comes in the form of a lawsuit brought by Shelby County, Alabama challenging the Voting Rights Act working its way up to the Supreme Court.  More specifically, the part of the Voting Rights Act under attack today is Section 5 of the law that gives the Justice Department the right to review any changes in voting procedure proposed by a county or state that's covered under this provision before it's enacted. Greg Palast, author of Billionaires and Ballot Bandits, has been covering the subject of voter suppression efforts for years now, and has [...]

Veterans Day Double Header

Veterans Day was officially yesterday - November 11 , but we'll talk about it today on both my show and Randi Rhodes'! We honor those who served our nation while, at the same time, hope we never send more men & women to war.  So, Leah Bolger, president of Veterans for Peace will join me on both shows today. On my show, we'll talk about the latest casualty in the world of progressive talk radio.  On Friday evening, Clear Channel flipped Portland's KPOJ to sports.. deja vu all over again. Florida's 29 electoral votes were finally awarded to President Obama! [...]

No Pity for the Billionaires Here

It's a busy day here at Radio or Not headquarters.  The final presidential debate is tonight, and the future of the nation is on the line. We've been hearing a lot about the billionaires and the plutocrats lately - for very good reason.  What's really at stake is whether or not the deep divide between the very wealthy and the rest of us becomes ever deeper and impossible to gap, or fairness is a goal to aspire to. Today, we'll address the subject with one of my favorite authors on the subject - Thomas Frank, columnist for Harpers and [...]

Down Memory Lane and Into the Future

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120830_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Mark_Thompson_and_politics_too.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   This picture was taken sometime around 1992, in the KLOS/Los Angeles studio.  Of course, that's James Taylor. And me. They guys to my left and my right are the famous (infamous) Mark and Brian with whom I spent four very busy, successful years as their producer. They signed off from their last broadcast two weeks ago tomorrow after 25 years together at KLOS.  While my four years as part of the show sounds like a drop in their massive bucket, it was a big part of my professional [...]

Recall Revolt

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120606_Nicole_Sandler_Show.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   So, what the fuck happened in Wisconsin yesterday? Did big money win the day? Yes, but it's more complicated than that.  People revolted against yet another recall, or so it seems.  Recall exhaustion? That's what the exit polls are saying.  As Jamie Bouie writes (posted by Greg Sargent in WaPo), "On Wisconsin, Conventional Wisdom is Mostly Wrong".  According to exit polls, Walker won 17 percent of Obama supporters in the state, and overall, last night’s electorate favored the president over Mitt Romney by a significant margin, 52 [...]

Trayvon Martin and FloriDUH

A 17-year old black man named Trayvon Martin was the victim of a racist murderer who is standing behind the law, know as "Stand Your Ground."  The only thing more heinous is that the police in Sanford, Florida have let him do it. Not only is the murderer a racist, but Trayvon Martin is the victim of a hate crime.  The evidence is right there in George Zimmerman's 911 call.  Here's the whole thing: If you listen closely, right around the 2:22 mark, you'll hear Mr. Zimmerman, under his breath, mutter "Fucking coons". Listen here: The news broke this morning [...]

OK, so much of the country has checked out this week, but we're still here carrying on! Today is a double header... I popped in to finish off the year of the Nicole Sandler Show here on Radio or Not this morning.  Cliff Schecter and John Fugelsang helped us close the book on 2011.  That one is up on the podcast so you can listen in case you missed it. I'm now sitting in Randi Rhodes' studio, getting ready to fill in for her again today.  It's going to be another fun afternoon with another visit from Cliff Schecter talking [...]
