Years of Living Misogynistically

misogyny Syllabification: mi·sog·y·ny Pronunciation: /məˈsäjənē NOUN Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women:she felt she was struggling against thinly disguised misogyny Welcome to 2014 - the year Misogyny went mainstream. Yesterday, the highest court in the land codified women's place as second class citizens into law with its misdirected and horribly wrong decision in the Hobby Lobby case. But the five Christian men on the court took it even a further step by saying that corporations religious rights trump the rights of said corporations' actual living, breathing female employees'! And this isn't the first time the Roberts-Alito-Scalia-Thomas-Kennedy court has ruled [...]

Supreme Bullshit!

The Roberts Court will likely go down in history as one of, if not the worst Supreme Court in our relatively short history. Today, we were anticipating the final four decisions for this session. But this ego-maniacal set of justices are prolonging our misery for one more weekend. Today, they gave us two unanimous decisions that make any reasonable person ask what these idiots are smoking! The first decision offered today was written by one of the "liberal" justices, Stephen Breyer. In NLRB v. Noel Canning,   SCOTUS decided the fate of "recess appointments." At issue: (1) Whether the President’s recess-appointment power may [...]

Pursuit of Happiness

This week was filled with sad stories - from the death of Paddy Kraska, the Susie Madrak's story of her friend's suicide, to the slaughter of dolphins continuing at Taiji Cove to the realization that the 85 wealthiest people in the world hold more wealth than the 3.5 billion people who make up the less fortunate half of the world's population and more. If you're wondering who those hoarding the most wealth around the world are, just take a look at Forbes' list of the world's billionaires. Just think of all the good that could be done if those wealthiest [...]

Absurdity Thursday

Stepping away from my usual "opposite world" meme - in honor of Absurdity Today's Julianna Forlano's regular Thursday appearance, we deem today "Absurdity Thursday". I started this morning's show with the intention of lightening things up after a really awful week.  But as the show progressed and we talked about the stories we didn't get to earlier in the week, I realized that each was more absurd than the last... from McDonald's starting a financial planning site (be sure to look at the numbers they filled in on page 4)  to show their obscenely underpaid employees that they can, indeed, support a [...]

Fighting Back with Funny!

Yesterday, I wrote about the GOP's "rebranding" effort following their "autopsy" in the wake of the 2012 elections.  Let it be known that they're doing the exact opposite of everything recommended in that report. Just today, in his Plum Line blog at the Washington Post, Greg Sargent marveled at the backwards nature of today's Republican Party in "GOP opposition to gay workplace equality will do wonders for that 'makeover'" -  a piece about the fact that ENDA (The Employment Non-Discrimination Act) today passed out of the Senate Health and Education Committee with votes from three Republicans (Kirk, Murkowski and Hatch), [...]

GOP’s Zombie War on Women or Love the Fetus, Hate the Child

March 18, 2013 was less than four months ago. That was the day that RNC chair, (the unfortunately named) Reince Priebus made public the GOP Autopsy  (his name for it, not ours). The 100-page report opined, on the subject of women, ... it is important to note that 40 percent of female voters are single and that Obama won single women by a whopping 36 percent. The RNC must improve its efforts to include female voters and promote women to leadership ranks within the committee. Additionally, when developing our Party’s message, women need to be part of this process to represent some of the unique concerns that female voters may [...]

Get Away!

I never thought I'd quote Glenn Beck, but there's a first time for everything. The moron of mid-morning radio (and now the interwebs too) actually said something I can agree with.  Well, OK, it was only a fraction of the entire quote in which he ragged on Sen. Marco Rubio for supporting immigration reform and accused him of being a (gasp!) progressive Republican.  As a Floridian, I can promise you that there is nothing progressive about Mr. Rubio.  Anyway,  Glenny said "Get away! Get away!  Otherwise, brother, we’re going to have to send you away.” The rest of it was [...]

Just Another Mundane Monday

I don't always hate Mondays, but the Monday after driving six hours in each direction to drop my kid off at camp is a day I'd rather be sleeping.  But it's such a busy week that there's little time for rest for the weary... On the road, I saw a slew of billboards for the law firm Morgan & Morgan, with Charlie Crist's face smiling down on me, reminding me that I have no clue what he stands for other than political ambition.  The former Republican governor of Florida decided to eschew a second term in order to run [...]

The Plight of the Pre-Old

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120822_Nicole_Sandler_Show.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window I am of the Pre-Old group.  We poor, unfortunate sots who are currently just under 55 who will be screwed (and not in a good way) if Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney have their way. Yes, they'd preserve Medicare benefits for our current seniors (or so they say), but those of us under that magical 55-year old mark will have "more choices".  (If you believe that I have some lovely swampland for sale just a few miles west of where I sit right now.) As much as the GOP [...]
