Nicole talks about the media's fear mongering - from Ebola to ISIS and beyond. Norman Solomon joins to talk about the targeting of whistle-blowers and journalist James Risen. And Susie Madrak talks about corporate exploitation of workers and consumers. Plus the latest news and info you need to know.
Nicole's theme for the day is "Sad but True," recounting truly sad, but sadly true news items. Huffington Post's Ryan Grim tells about meeting with Julian Assange inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, and Crooks & Liars' Susie Madrak is back for our Wednesday morning get-together.
Nicole talks about the madness that is the US involvement in yet another war, and the lip service being paid to climate change. Guests include Susie Madrak of Crooks & Liars, and World Beyond War's David Swanson. Plus Osceola County (FL) commission candidate Viviana Janer who was fired by Marriott because she wouldn't quit the race tells us about what happened.
Three years ago today, a group of New Yorkers descended on Wall Street's Zuccotti Park to protest the problems caused by and lack of any consequences for those responsible for the financial meltdown of 2008. Obviously, there was much more that the original Occupiers of Wall Street were protesting, but the wealth and justice inequality that is synonymous with Wall Street was the unifying evil that was being fought. Today, though, I was hard pressed to find any remnants of the once-promising protest movement. Even the official Occupy Wall Street website had no new front-page article to commemorate the day. Ironically, [...]
When the House Republicans needed foreign policy advice, they turned to the man most responsible for getting us into this mess in the first place. Cheney was the war's chief propagandist, who told the American public more spectacular falsehoods than anyone, including Bush himself. Cheney was the one who told us in 2002 that "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us." He's the one who tried to convince us that Saddam Hussein might have helped engineer the [...]
As if we needed any more evidence that the world has, indeed, gone mad... Yesterday, ISIS released another video of one of their masked, cowardly, subhuman, heartless, soulless, thug terrorists beheading another American journalist, Steven Sotloff. Today's blog will be short, with just links to the people and stories I spoke with and about today, as I'm not feeling well and the news is making me even sicker... Dean Obeidallah was up first to discuss his latest for The Daily Beast, "It'll Take More Than Bombs to Stop ISIS". (When you're done with that, definitely click over to read, "Stop the [...]
And after you witness an instructor get his brains blown out by a 9-year old shooting an Uzi sub machine gun, you can eat a giant, juicy burger. Mmmmm. This is what we've apparently come to. Welcome to America. The website for Bullets & Burgers was down this morning. I expected either to see an apology and notice that children would no longer be able to shoot these lethal weapons - or a memorial to the now-dead instructor, Charles Vacca. Sadly, the website is now back up - with pictures of all the weapons that you can go there to [...]
As evidenced by the events unfolding in Ferguson, MO over the past 10 days, there's a lot wrong with America. Some of the problems are within the president's authority to fix. Thomas Frank joined me in the last half-hour of today's show to talk about the three he outlined in his latest piece at Salon, "How to Wreck the GOP in 3 Easy Steps." Of course, his suggestions would only wreck the GOP's chances of taking over the Senate in November, and bolster the Democrats', and make the country better for those of us struggling to get through each [...]
The "About LAPD" page at JoinLAPD.com tells us: In 1955, a contest was announced in the Los Angeles Police Department's internal magazine, BEAT. The contest involved devising a motto for the Los Angeles Police Academy. The motto needed to be something that would succinctly express the ideals to which those who serve as Los Angeles Police Officers are dedicated. The winning entry, "to protect and to serve", was submitted by Officer Joseph S. Dorobek and served as the LAPD academy's motto until, by City Council action, it became the official motto of the entire Los Angeles Police Department in 1963. It continues [...]
