#YesAllWomen and “Chris’s Dad is Right”

I started seeing the #YesAllWomen hastag on Twitter sometime over the weekend. Even when a few people Tweeted telling me to follow it, I didn't make the connection between that and the massacre in Santa Barbara on Friday evening. I found the Tweets fascinating, and began searching for the story behind it. Though I still don't know where it started or by whom, the message is resonating with millions of people globally. I came across a beautiful essay this morning in The New Yorker, written by Sasha Weiss, "The Power of #YesAllWomen" . In the piece, Weiss tells how the hashtag [...]

Moving Onward

Randi Rhodes broadcast her final program on Friday. I'm hoping she'll come back - but, for now, she's done. I was honored to be in the studio on her last day. Not that I was invited, mind you. I just showed up. As I told her, I just couldn't imagine sitting at home listening. So, I got her a balloon and a card and a bottle of champagne... and it was the definition of bittersweet. But move forward we must... so, on the show today, we looked to the future. Congressman Alan Grayson was on with me in the first [...]

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Let’s Make Sure It’s Streamed!

In his masterpiece, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,"  Gil Scott-Heron offers an unbridled indictment of the failure of the corporate media, which has only gotten exponentially worse in the four decades since we first heard it. An updated version would certainly include some reference to today's predicament. Senator Al Franken calls the fight for Net Neutrality "the free speech issue of our time" . Presidential candidate Barack Obama promised that he'd always support and would only appoint FCC commissioners who'd uphold his belief in the need for a free and open internet. So, WTF is going on with Chairman Tom [...]

Grateful & Thankful

I began the show today with a big shout out of thanks and appreciation to all who have stepped up recently with financial support of the show. As I've reiterated often, I'll never put up a pay wall on this show. I know too many people who are struggling, and don't want to deny anyone access to the program. But with today's business/radio climate, the only way this show will survive is by virtue of your donations. And yesterday, a couple of listeners stepped up in a really big way. Erika from California has surprised and humbled me in [...]

Whose Airwaves? (04/21/2014)

Radio is a sound salvationRadio is cleaning up the nationThey say you better listen to the voice of reasonBut they don't give you any choice'cause they think that it's treason. So you had better do as you are told. You better listen to the radio.I wanna bite the hand that feeds me.I wanna bite that hand so badly.I want to make them wish they'd never seen me.Some of my friends sit around every eveningand they worry about the times aheadBut everybody else is overwhelmed by indifferenceand the promise of an early bedYou either shut up or get cut up;they don't wanna hear [...]

Ship of Fools

We're setting sail to the place on the map from which no one has ever returned Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool by the light of the crosses that burned. Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace and the gold and the cotton and pearls It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need. You sail away from the light of the world on this trip, baby. You will pay tomorrow You're gonna pay tomorrow You will pay tomorrow Save me. Save me from tomorrow I don't want to sail with [...]

Media Fail

If there's one subject I talk about a lot on this show it's the epic failure of media in America. Today, I spoke with journalist David Dayen who wrote a piece for Al Jazeera America  about the "Better Off Budget" - the budget released by the Congressional Progressive Caucus on Wednesday of last week. Unless you saw Dayen's piece or read about in on another blog somewhere, you don't know that it was offered, because the mainstream, corporate media completely ignored it... as they do every year! Dave Johnson asked "Why the Blackout on the Progressive 'Better off Budget'?" [...]

At Least We’re Not Freezing!

So we've got that going for us. This weekend, I attended the "First Annual" Lauderdale Live Music Festival.  I put "first annual" in quotes because the organizers were confident enough to include that in its promotional materials, but given the anemic attendance, I can't imagine there will be a second annual outing. And that's too bad. I was surprised when I saw the lineup, as bands I love like Lyle Lovett, Indigo Girls and Robert Randolph don't often venture down to these parts. We have no decent radio who'd ever played any of those artists, and a weird population mix [...]

Radio – Or Not?

When I came up with the name "Radio or Not" for this website, I was being clever.  Obviously, it's a take on "ready or not" - something that one says in anticipation of something exciting. Then, or course, the more literal meaning.  What I do is radio... but these days without the traditional radio transmitter or antenna.  So, it's radio, but it's not. That, I believe, is the future of radio. No, I don't think over the air radio will ever go away, just as we still have basic over the air television (although I don't know anyone who [...]

She’s Gone – Crazy Bachmann Edition

As much as I would have loved to see her go down on election night, the news that Michele Bachmann will not seek a 5th term in the US House of Representatives was a welcome way to start the day.  My only regret is that the hard drive containing the last 5 years of news audio clips died last week, so I wasn't able to pull together my own fitting tribute of her craziest statements. Even her video announcing that she won't seek re-election is bizarre.  Just check out her smile and giddiness during the announcement. Even funnier are her [...]
