I’d Take Away The Guns

Earlier this week, on the eve of Passover, a well-known and well-documented racist anti-Semite opened fire on two Jewish centers in Kansas, killing three people. And this week, egged on by the "Patriots" at Faux News and hate talk radio, scores of gun nuts showed up, weapons in hand, to fight back against the gubmint officials who dared to try to collect the million dollars in fees owed by a crazy rancher in Nevada for 20+ years of allowing his cattle to graze federal lands and ignoring the fees. Susie Madrak of Crooks and Liars pointed out that Sean [...]

A Bridge and Toxic Water

Chris Christie has a problem with a bridge, and over 300,ooo residents of West Virginia have toxic water. Welcome to Monday! I think Christie's troubles are just beginning... pop some popcorn and settle in, because this one will last a while. Stay tuned! Although the NY Times and Washington Post both have been covering the sickening story out of West Virginia, apparently none of the Sunday talk shows thought it was a big enough story to compete with Christie's troubles, a baby panda's debut or the three-year anniversary (later this week) of Sully Sullenberger landing his plane on the Hudson River. [...]

Cold Start to a New Year

Even here in Florida! For some reason, the mercury will hit 85 this afternoon, and dip down to 45 tonight. But no, there's no climate change. Not at all. The best part of my day was watching Maysoon Zayid's brilliant TED talk. In case you haven't seen it yet, have a look now. It's been too long since Maysoon joined us, so she came on this morning to talk about that experience and why General Hospital should hire her (and they should!) And, as it's Monday, Nicole Belle of Crooks and Liars joined in with our first Fools on the [...]

Double Header Wednesday

Busy day today! I just finished my show this morning and am now getting ready to head up to West Palm Beach to guest host for Randi Rhodes... So bear with the brevity of this update. On my show today, I spoke with Vivek Tiwary, a ridiculously successful Broadway producer (with lots more to his list of accomplishments as well), whose new book - a graphic biography - The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story -  is a NY Times bestseller and soon to be a major motion picture! Susie Madrak joined in from her perch at the newly re-designed [...]

At Least We’re Not Freezing!

So we've got that going for us. This weekend, I attended the "First Annual" Lauderdale Live Music Festival.  I put "first annual" in quotes because the organizers were confident enough to include that in its promotional materials, but given the anemic attendance, I can't imagine there will be a second annual outing. And that's too bad. I was surprised when I saw the lineup, as bands I love like Lyle Lovett, Indigo Girls and Robert Randolph don't often venture down to these parts. We have no decent radio who'd ever played any of those artists, and a weird population mix [...]

Stranger than Fiction

From the Truth is Stranger than Fiction files this morning: McDonald’s advises its low-wage workers to try “breaking food into pieces” to feel full, and urges them to “pack your bags” for vacation, “chew away cares” with gum, “keep the faith” by going to church, and “sing away stress.”  And, oh yeah, return some of those Christmas gifts to get the cash! In response to criticism over Walmart employees holding a food drive for fellow Walmart employees, the company is pushing back.  And it's Ashton Kutcher to the rescue! A freshman teaparty congressman from Florida, Trey Radel, was busted buying [...]

Surrender!

As today's show was in progress, the news came trickling out that Speaker John Boehner would finally relent and allow the Reid-McConnell bill to end the shutdown and raise the debt ceiling to come to the floor for a vote, even if it means violating the asinine "Hastert Rule". But as the show ended at noon there were still some soap opera cliffhanger worthy questions hanging in the balance: Would Ted Cruz hold up the vote? Would the House vote before the Senate? We now know the answer to the first... No.  After Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell gave their [...]

Weed

CNN aired a pretty remarkable program last night.  I don't know if they're going to air it again or make it available online - so the next best thing is to watch "Should Grandma Smoke Pot?".  It was put together by Robert Platshorn, the guy behind The Silver Tour, who also holds the distinction of being imprisoned longer than any other American on marijuana charges. Yes. That familiar voice narrating the video is mine.  Robert Platshorn joined me on the show this morning to talk about the CNN special report, Weed, and to update us on the medical marijuana movement [...]

The Whistleblowers’ Lament

What a difference a decade makes! Back in 2002, Time magazine named "The Whistleblowers" the Person(s) of the Year!  Today, the same publication - according to whistleblower Jesselyn Radack writing at Daily Kos   joins the Obama administration in equating whistleblowers with spies, a characterization aimed at silencing other potential whistleblowers. As I wrote yesterday, the magazine's cover story is a complete disaster. It pictures hacktivist Aaron Swartz, National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden & WikiLeaks defendant Bradley Manning under the screaming words, "THE INFORMERS." Worse, it ignores key facts, the law, and the magazine's prior recognition of whistleblowers when it named "The [...]

A Tale of Two TV Talkers (and more news you can use)

I offer for your comparison the two TV talkers pictured above.  On the left, we have Jon Stewart, the unlikely champion of disseminating news and information to the masses in the most accessible way possible!  On the right, a blowhard propagandist on the cable network bought and paid for by the Republican Party who wouldn't know a fact if it bit him on the ass. Last night, we heard the news that Jon Stewart would be taking a 12-week hiatus from The Daily Show this summer to direct his first film... and it's not a comedy! To understand the story [...]
