She’s Gone – Crazy Bachmann Edition

As much as I would have loved to see her go down on election night, the news that Michele Bachmann will not seek a 5th term in the US House of Representatives was a welcome way to start the day.  My only regret is that the hard drive containing the last 5 years of news audio clips died last week, so I wasn't able to pull together my own fitting tribute of her craziest statements. Even her video announcing that she won't seek re-election is bizarre.  Just check out her smile and giddiness during the announcement. Even funnier are her [...]

Caucus Casualty

The Iowa caucuses are history.  We could call it much ado about nothing, as it really doesn't mean anything at all.  Except to Michelle Bachmann to called it quits today after her last place finish yesterday. It is truly a loss for comedians everywhere.  But honestly, I'm just thrilled I don't have to hear her call it the Unined States any more.  We did however learn that President Obama is a socialist and, left to his devices, America would become a Socialist country, and "obamacare" will destroy American society and life as we know it. We also learned to pronouce [...]

Another One Bites The Dust

Actually, I was planning to use that headline to wrap up my broadcast week... but I guess it also applies to the latest dictator to die.  I'm not sure at whose hands he died, but Gadaffy (or however it is spelled) is dead. It's quite interesting that there's video of the fallen madman after he was captured, bloodied but still obviously very much alive.  Will we ever know exactly what happened? Probably not.  Should we care?  Not really. After all... we've got troubles right here in River City my friend. ... with a capital T that rhymes with [...]

The Dog Days of Summer

According to wikipedia, "Dog Days" (Latin: di?s canicul?r?s) are the hottest, most sultry days of summer in late August. Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress. The name comes from the ancient belief thatSirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather. Well, the heat that plagued most of the country earlier this summer has, for the most part, subsided.  And there seems to be no such thing as a slow news [...]

Hurricanes & Quakes: A Blessing or God’s Way of Getting Politicians’ Attention

So far, no locusts. On behalf of Californians everywhere (I lived in LA for 14 years), I apologize to the east coast for all of those 5.8 earthquake jokes. And on behalf of hurricane veterans, I apologize for pooh-poohing a category 1/tropical storm. Seriously. You're all natural disaster veterans now too... I'm truly sorry for those who live in Eric Cantor's district, which was home to the epicenter of the quake and certainly got hit by some of Irene's ire.  Your congressman doesn't want any disaster relief aid for you, unless he can take it from your Medicare or Social Security [...]

Beware the Zealots!

Religious zealots will be the death of society.  I truly believe that, even more so after my conversation this morning with Rachel Tabachnick.  Rachel has long been researching and writing about the impact of the Religious Right on politics and, of late, has turned much of her attention toward the New Apostolic Reformation.  Much of her past work is found at Talk2Action.org, and she has recently begun amassing info about NAR at NARwatch.org. As she often writes about religious extremists and their impact on politics, I was happy to see that she has a piece in the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz about [...]

Oh God!

"Oh God" is a multi-use term, much like the word "fuck" serves multiple purposes.  And although I'm an atheist, I use the "Oh God" expression fairly frequently. "Oh God" was my reaction when I first heard this clip from Michele Bachmann explaining how God told her to marry Marcus Bachmann (even though they weren't in love or anything), and then went to law school and for her post-doctorate in tax law (even though she hates taxes) because her husband told her to, and the Bible says women must be submissive to their men! Of course, that's how she really feels. [...]

Rick Perry Sucks

I was talking about his politics in the headline - but, as they say, one picture a worth a thousand words!  It sure looks like Rick has a bit of experience in this type of sucking  (and quite a technique too). But his politics are truly frightening.  Think Progress offers a couple of clips from his appearances in Iowa that should make you realize what he's all about. In this clip, it certainly sounds as if Gov. Perry is suggesting a violent response to Ben Bernanke's policies: And in this one, he's asking for anarchy by saying we should impose [...]

It’s a Mad World

How else could you explain Michele Bachmann actually being taken seriously as a presidential candidate?  She came out on top, so to speak, of the Ames Straw Poll. Interesting, too, that the "front-runner" Mitt Willard Romney had such a poor showing.  OK, I know he didn't actually participate - but neither did Sarah Palin, and she's not even a declared candidate, and she fared better than he did! In case you're wondering the exact breakdown (courtesy of MSNBC)... 2011 Straw Poll Full Results (Votes, %) 1. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (4823, 28.55%) 2. Congressman Ron Paul (4671, 27.65%) 3. Governor Tim [...]

Bachmann and Huntsman and Cain, Oh My!

I know the common way of thinking today is that with this slate of GOP presidential hopefuls, Obama will win a second term quite handily.  Unfortunately, President Obama seems to be doing too much to make that likelihood a much longer shot than it should be.  The man who so many of us voted for in the hope that he'd be our generation's FDR has instead decided to try to be everybody's BFF.  And it's not working! Yesterday, Michele Bachmann officially announced her bid for the presidency.  Even though she claimed to embrace all four legs of a [...]
