Colbert, Christie, Climate & Christian Hypocrisy

(Ed note: I know the image above is not of a cow. It was the perfect image for today's show, where nothing is as it should be. Welcome to Opposite World, Bizarro World, or the world where a cow looks like a horse.) Let's begin with Colbert. Last week, Stephen Colbert showed what real satire is, and the right wing nuts in this country proved they haven't got a clue. Colbert pointed out the complete insincerity and blatant racism of Dan Snyder, the guy who owns the NFL team based in Washington DC, with this bit (starts at the 8:31 [...]

Literally Racists

I've recently made a concerted effort to stay away from playing clips of right wing nut jobs on my show, but sometimes they say things so absurd they figuratively make my head explode! There were two such incidents yesterday that metaphorically drove me crazy. I know Joe Biden gets chided for his misuse of the word "literally". But it seems that when he does it, it's little more than an annoyance or something easily mocked. But Rush Limbaugh is supposed to be a professional broadcaster. His stock in trade is words! The clip below is a perfect example of why [...]

If the Hood Fits

Wow. the truth hurts, huh? Those teabaggers can dish it out, but it seems they can't take it.  Must be the thin sheets skin. Alan Grayson's email was tame, especially compared with the vile hatred he's received since then.  When I asked what kind of response they've seen, the congressman's office sent me a sampling of some of the emails - which really underscore the fact that Grayson's analogy was spot on. From “Kip”: “Well, I would like to inform you that you are equated to a German Nazi!!! … I hope they drum your sorry a** out the next [...]

Tuesday Titters

I thought we could all use a few laughs today, so after a serious conversation with Crooks & Liars' Susie Madrak about her piece "Anybody but Cory Booker," we had some fun at the expense of today's GOP and, yes, Anthony Weiner's wiener. There's nothing funny about who NJ will elect as its next US Senator, but I'm with Susie.  I'd much rather see a progressive like Rush Holt or Frank Pallone, but it seems as if the media has already anointed super hero Booker as senator.  Meanwhile, NJ is battling some fierce weather today, so turnout will likely be [...]

Racism is Alive and Well in America

I could think of no better topic for today's show than the chronic problem of racism in America. I am not a supporter of Eric Holder's.  I think he's done a lousy job as Attorney General, but he sure did deliver a brilliant speech at the NAACP convention in Orlando yesterday. In case you missed it, it's worth a view or a read of the transcript. I played some of the pertinent parts on the show this morning, including these quotes: This afternoon I want to assure you of two things: I am concerned about this case and  - and [...]

Thursday-Racism, Humor and BP’s Lies

My week ends on Thursdays, and I try to end it on a fun note. Today is no different, as John Fugelsang will join us -- as long as he doesn't get caught in traffic and have his cell phone battery die again.  But it has to get tougher and tougher for political comedians to be funny right now, as the word seems to be on a calamity course. I'm sure he'll live up to the challenge. In the first hour tonight, I'll speak with one of my favorite guests.  Tim Wise is one of the most prominent anti-racist authors [...]

A Heartbreaking Week Comes To An End

I'm certainly glad it's Friday. This has been an incredibly difficult week. Although Monday was just another day, the world changed on Tuesday afternoon at 4:53pm ET.  It's impossible to avoid the heartbreaking stories and images coming from Haiti, where the death toll today is estimated at somewhere around 150,000 people. Schools, hospitals, homes and most of the other buildings in and around the capital city of Port Au Prince collapsed under a massive earthquake that registered 7.0 on the Richter scale. As the days pass, the chances of survivors being pulled from the wreckage lessens. And we watch, helplessly, [...]

Where’s The Compassion?

For some time now, I've bemoaned the lack of compassion in today's world.  But we're not all lacking in that area.  It seems that the most compassion-deficient in the US today are of the Republican persuasion. If we didn't already know that Rush Limbaugh was a drug-addled, sexist, over-paid windbag, that conclusion would have been a no-brainer to anyone who heard some of his comments today: Limbaugh claimed that President Obama was somehow happy about the catastrophic loss of life and property in Haiti because he'd be able to use our response to boost his credibility with the "light-skinned and [...]
