7-19-23 Nicole Sandler Show- SAGAFTRA Strike Talk with David Jolliffe, Frances Fisher & Sean Astin

View on Zencastr ----Download the audio podcast below (right click, save as), or listen to it by hitting play above---- It's time for labor in America to stand up for workers rights! The Writer's Guild (WGA) went out on May 2, and SAG/AFTRA voted to strike this past weekend. Most people really don't know the things they're striking about, but should. So that's our mission today, to explain and understand. To get us there, I called on David Jolliffe, an old friend who happens to be on the National Board/Executive committee as well as on the negotiating committee. (You [...]

Governor Did a Bad Bad Thing

Maureen McDonnell spent $6,000 around the time of Bob McDonnell's January 2010 inauguration and complained to the PAC the family did not have enough to finance her first lady wardrobe - Photo courtesy of AP Guilty! Actually, she's guilty of spending $50, let alone thousands on that dress. But that's not why they were convicted.  A federal jury on Thursday found former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, guilty of public corruption — sending an emphatic message that they believed the couple sold the office once occupied by Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson to a [...]

Fight for 15 and Other Fabulous ‘F’ Words

FAST FOOD FORWARD FIGHT FOR FIFTEEN It began with Fast Food Forward - NYC area fast food workers walking off the job, demanding a living wage.  It spread to Chicago, where workers decided to Fight For 15 , once again using those alliterative 'F' words to focus on funding families. In the wake of McDonald's insulting sample monthly budget  (check out page 4), the protests have continued spreading - St. Louis, Milwaukee and Detroit have seen similar strikes in recent weeks.  And this week, over the next four days, fast food workers in Flint, MI and Kansas City, MO join in [...]

I’m an Atheist too

My favorite video story in the wake of the Moore, OK tornado was not the elderly woman's dog emerging safely from the rubble during her interview (though it did warm my cockles), or of the teachers who risked their own lives to save the children in their care, or the many images of children and parents reuniting. No, it was Wolf Blitzer showing his true ineptitude when he said to a woman who escaped harm, "You got to thank the Lord, right?"   When she didn't respond to his expectations (I guess he though she should drop to her knees [...]

With a Little Help from our Friends

George W. Bush used to say he was a "compassionate conservative." Whether he was or not is beside the point -  the fact that no such animal exists any more. The town of Moore, Oklahoma was devastated yesterday by a massive tornado.  But James Inhofe, US Senator from that state wasted no time in declaring that any disaster relief would have to be offset by cuts elsewhere.  Sickening. We are a nation already suffering from money hoarding at the top and too much being taken from those with the least to give.  On today's show, we looked at areas [...]

Rape is Rape – in Cleveland or in the Military!

Yes, we had some technical difficulties on the show today, but I seem to have the problems fixed, finally.  We'll be back Monday with phones in working order. In the meantime, it was a good thing I had lots to talk about, as we weren't able to get any of our guests on the line. But we did talk a bit about the horrific revelations coming out of Cleveland's house of horrors - and the horrific reality of sexual assault in the US Military. Wired has the details on the Air Force Chief of Sexual-Assault Prevention's arrest on sexual battery [...]

Shootings, Strikes and the Public Airwaves

Nicole talks about the latest shootings, this time involving a pro football player. Journalist Sarah Jaffe joins in to talk about last week's Fast Food workers strike in NYC. And Sue Wilson of the Media Action Center on her battle with the FCC.

Fast Food Forward Thursday

Something strange and wonderful is happening today in New York City.  Workers who toil for slave wages at fast food restaurants around the city are staging a one-day strike to raise awareness of the conditions under which they toil.  It's all under the umbrella of Fast Food Forward. The website, on which you can sign up to stand in solidarity with these underpaid workers, has some great information: We can't survive on $7.25! In America, people who work hard should be able to afford basic necessities like groceries, rent, childcare and transportation. While fast food corporations reap the benefits of [...]

Hello Murphy, Good bye West! Plus Black Friday Strikes, Goats for Sudan and Forever Families!

The "Allen West is toast" victory tour continues today with the guy who unseated him! Patrick Murphy joined the show this morning to talk about beating the craziest member of the US House of Representatives. In case you were wondering, no, West never called him to conceded. He did it on Fox Faux News and Facebook. Now that's classLESS, but then again, I'd expect nothing more from a war criminal piece of shit like Allen West.
