The country-clubbing of America

Another snark-filled guest post by the one, the only Will Durst: RED VELVET ROPAGE And now for a few choice words concerning my recent demotion to the status of second- class citizen. The amazing thing is how quickly my metamorphosis into Cockroachlandia occurred. One minute, I’m walking around like an ordinary human; the next minute, I’m an insect, an unwanted stiff, a bum, a vagabond, a jamoke. About as popular as feet in a punchbowl.   It seems America is splitting into two different categories: first class and… wherever I am. Which is as far from prosperous as Kathmandu is to [...]

Can We Still Overcome?

The world lost a treasure. Pete Seeger died at the age of 94 after a lifetime of music and activism. He probably didn't always see his actions as activism, but as doing what he thought was right. But we owe him a huge thanks. The NY Times ran a lovely obit today that struck all the right chords. But after I already finished today's show, I read a tweet that alerted me to the best salute to Seeger - Bruce Springsteen's introduction of our global treasure at Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Concert: I started the show today by playing the [...]

Stop the Killing

Deeply concerned by inhumaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing. USG opposes drive hunt fisheries. — キャロライン・ケネディ駐日米国大使 (@CarolineKennedy) January 18, 2014   We can thank the new US Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, and Yoko Ono too, for the fact that we're talking about the annual slaughter of dolphins at Taiji Cove in Japan. I first learned of the horrific practice in the summer of 2009. I was hosting a nightly show on Air America Radio, and was sent a review DVD of the documentary The Cove  Academy Award® Winner for Best Documentary of 2009, THE COVE follows an elite team of activists, [...]

Fight for 15 and Other Fabulous ‘F’ Words

FAST FOOD FORWARD FIGHT FOR FIFTEEN It began with Fast Food Forward - NYC area fast food workers walking off the job, demanding a living wage.  It spread to Chicago, where workers decided to Fight For 15 , once again using those alliterative 'F' words to focus on funding families. In the wake of McDonald's insulting sample monthly budget  (check out page 4), the protests have continued spreading - St. Louis, Milwaukee and Detroit have seen similar strikes in recent weeks.  And this week, over the next four days, fast food workers in Flint, MI and Kansas City, MO join in [...]

The Happiest Place on Earth?

Michael Moore told the huge crowd in Madison Wisconsin that 400 obscenely wealthy Americans have more money than the combined assets of 155 million Americans! I haven't been to the dentist in over two years because I lost my dental insurance along with my last regular job.  After struggling with a toothache for the past week (a tooth that already was the recipient of a root canal and an obscenely expensive crown), I've come to the sad realization that it's likely an abscess.... One that will likely cost me a small fortune to deal with. But I bit the proverbial [...]
