What’s New Pussycat?

I always say we need some comic relief on the show - and we didn't have to go very far. In fact, the actual comedy from Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was even better than the comic sendoff of his lunacy from SNL... See for yourself: Via SNL The Real Thing I'll take truth over fiction any day. Although sometimes, the truth just simply sucks. Today, I spoke with my favorite Congressman Alan Grayson about some issues he's been quite candid about: the TPP, Drone strikes in Pakistan, the NSA spying program and the attacks on Glenn Greenwald and other journalists, [...]

The NSA Knows How You Voted

I actually have no idea whether or not the NSA knows how you voted, but I thought it was a clever way to put both the NSA and the fact that today is election day into one headline. It's an off-off election year, with a few important races.  Voters in NJ will prove that they're idiots by re-electing the big bully, Chris Christie, and voters in Virginia are faced with a choice between a despicable human being and a laughable one.  But laughter is better than disgust, so the people of VA will likely hold their noses and vote for [...]

Stop Watching Us

The revelations keep on coming!  As thousands took to the streets in DC over the weekend, telling the administration and the NSA to stop watching us, we learned that - in addition to listening in on Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel's personal phone calls, the NSA monitored 60 million phone calls, texts and emails in Spain in one month! I played two videos on the show this morning, courtesy of StopWatching.US: There is no end in sight. Last night 60 Minutes devoted its opening segment to Benghazi. Talk about timing! I had already scheduled Ari Rabin-Havt for today's show. Ari is the morning [...]

What’s Right With Congress?

If I asked "what's wrong with Congress?" we'd be here all summer.  It's easier to answer "what's right with Congress?"!  Alan Grayson! As I told him on the show this morning, I'd be far less optimistic about the future of this nation if he weren't in Congress fighting for us. According to Dave Weigel at  Slate, Grayson has gone from being the Congressman "formerly known as crazy" to "the most effective member of the House" and MSNBC agreed. What happened?  Grayson is working both sides of the aisle to get work done. “We’ve passed 31 amendments in committee so far,” [...]

Secrets and Lies

Isn't it interesting that the day after we learn about  XKeyscore - the NSA tool that collects "nearly everything a user does on the internet," we get the story about a Long Island home being visited by the police because the wife was searching online for pressure cookers and her husband was searching for backpacks. Members of what she described as a "joint terrorism task force" descended on Catalano's home on Wednesday. A spokesman for the FBI told to Guardian on Thursday that its investigators were not involved in the visit, but that "she was visited by Nassau County police department [...]

The Whistleblowers’ Lament

What a difference a decade makes! Back in 2002, Time magazine named "The Whistleblowers" the Person(s) of the Year!  Today, the same publication - according to whistleblower Jesselyn Radack writing at Daily Kos   joins the Obama administration in equating whistleblowers with spies, a characterization aimed at silencing other potential whistleblowers. As I wrote yesterday, the magazine's cover story is a complete disaster. It pictures hacktivist Aaron Swartz, National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden & WikiLeaks defendant Bradley Manning under the screaming words, "THE INFORMERS." Worse, it ignores key facts, the law, and the magazine's prior recognition of whistleblowers when it named "The [...]

All the News The Corporate Media Doesn’t Deem You Fit to Know

As today's show ended, we were an hour away from the verdict in the Bradley Manning court martial.  I have no numbers to back this up, but I'd guess that if you took a poll of the American people, the vast majority would have no clue that the trial was even happening, let alone who Manning is or what he's accused of doing. I do believe people are responsible for their lack of knowledge; but in this case, the blame rests just as squarely on the shoulders of the corporate media who has a vested interest in controlling the messages [...]

A Broken Nation

Everything is broken... but not beyond repair. We could fix it if we'd only fix our broken Congress... A quick rundown of the broken things we talked about today: -The Environment  A "natural gas" drilling well in the Gulf of Mexico exploded Tuesday and is still spewing methane, just 50 miles from the Louisiana border, while there are two tar sands leaks poisoning Alberta, Canada.  And a train derailed at the Port of Tampa early this morning, spewing flammable ethanol. -The Fourth Amendment  The House yesterday voted down the Amash-Conyers amendment that would have effectively defunded the NSA's domestic spying [...]

Our Future Depends On You

That's the message I got from today's interview with Ray McGovern. Things are fucked up and only massive public protests and civil disobedience can turn this nation around.  Unfortunately, I think people are too busy just trying to survive themselves, with little energy left to help save the the USA. McGovern spent 27 years at the CIA, working for nine CIA directors. Primarily a substantive analyst and briefer, he nonetheless served in all four of CIA's main directorates and, during one of his postings abroad, helped manage a large covert action project. In January 2003, he co-founded Veteran Intelligence Professionals for [...]

Twenty-First Century Privacy

Thanks to the information released by Edward Snowden via The Guardian and the Washington Post, the world is now talking about super-secret surveillance that's been going on for decades.  Although the corporate media and the government would probably rather have you focus on Snowden and, to a lesser extent, Glenn Greenwald, the story is in the information that he risked his life and livelihood to expose.  Don't be distracted. Thankfully, many of us aren't falling for the ruse. On the 4th of July, a number of organizations joined forces to promote a day of rallies around the nation to Restore [...]
