The American Tealiban

The woman on the left is Holly "Hobby Lobby" Fisher, a misguided, under-educated dolt who believes that she's holding her "First and Second Amendment rights" in her hands in the picture above. The woman on the right is Sherafiyah Lewthwaite, an international terrorist known as the White Widow who is part of the Al-Shabaab Islamic militant group, a religious zealot who takes her marching orders from her misreading and misunderstanding of the Quran. Unfortunately, Ms. Fisher doesn't see the similarity in the two pictures. In fact, she went on "Fox & Friends" to try to explain her stupidity. Although the segment begins [...]

Hate and Intolerance in the Name of God

I understand that the religious right want to plunge the planet into apocalypse, but do they really have to talk what's left of the sensible and compassionate segment of the world's population with them? From their intolerance toward anyone they deem "different" to their insistence on imposing their warped religious beliefs on the rest of us under the guise of "freedom," these zealots are some truly scary people whose actions show that they are anything but "Christian" (meaning living by the teachings of Christ). The scene at the border crossings where hundreds of mostly unaccompanied children are entering the [...]

Taking the “DUH” out of FloriDUH

Greetings from the land of hanging chads and stand your ground insanity. It's also a state where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 4,587,502 to 4,128,098, yet the GOP controls both chambers of the legislature and all cabinet positions. Maybe it's the heat combined with the humidity that make people vote against their own best interests time after time. Regardless of the reasons, Florida has a chance to rid ourselves of some of the DUH that's infected our land. But to do that, Floridians have to vote in the August 26 primary, and vote for the only progressive Democrat in the race. If [...]

A Jingoistic Fourth of July

This week, we saw a bunch of racist assholes protesters blocking the roadway leading to an immigration processing office, holding up three buses with mostly women and children with hateful, misspelled signs while alternating between shouts of "USA, USA" with "Go Home" and "Get Out." Those Amerikkans blocked three buses with mostly children, all in the name of patriotism? Oh yeah, American exceptionalism at its best, huh? Sorry, but after witnessing scenes like this play out and after the embarrassment of riches from our Supreme Court this week, I'm ashamed to be an American. This is not the country envisioned [...]

About That Other SCOTUS Decision

With so much focus on the horrific Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision, we seem to have forgotten about the millions of workers who'll be screwed by the other decision handed down by the Court on Monday in Harris v Quinn. As my friend Dave Johnson wrote at OurFuture.org,  In case you were wondering why it is so hard for regular working people to get ahead in our economy, look no further than today’s Harris v. Quinn Supreme Court decision. In the usual 5-4 pattern, the corporate-conservatives on the Supreme Court struck another blow against the rights of working people to organize [...]

Years of Living Misogynistically

misogyny Syllabification: mi·sog·y·ny Pronunciation: /məˈsäjənē NOUN Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women:she felt she was struggling against thinly disguised misogyny Welcome to 2014 - the year Misogyny went mainstream. Yesterday, the highest court in the land codified women's place as second class citizens into law with its misdirected and horribly wrong decision in the Hobby Lobby case. But the five Christian men on the court took it even a further step by saying that corporations religious rights trump the rights of said corporations' actual living, breathing female employees'! And this isn't the first time the Roberts-Alito-Scalia-Thomas-Kennedy court has ruled [...]

Supremely Wrong

The Supreme Court has now adjourned until the first Monday in October. My only wish is that they all ride off into obscurity. Or at least the five of them who insisted on being on the wrong side of everything today. The justices decided to wait until today to render their final two opinions - one that sticks a knife through the heart of organized labor in the US, the other further eroding the separation of church and state - and underscoring the second class citizen status of women in America. The first decision offered this morning was in Harris v. [...]

Kinky Flashback Friday

Get your head out of the gutter. It's Kinky because today's "Flashback Friday" segment features Ray Davies of The Kinks! I had the honor of interviewing him a few times, but today we went back to our first meeting, at Los Angeles' KSCA fm 101.9. I can't find the exact date, but it was somewhere around 1995 or 96. Ray had just published his book X-Ray: The Unauthorized Biography, and was in town for a series of shows called "20th Century Man" which wound up being the blueprint for VH1's Storyteller series! Needless to say, that interview was one of the [...]

Supreme Bullshit!

The Roberts Court will likely go down in history as one of, if not the worst Supreme Court in our relatively short history. Today, we were anticipating the final four decisions for this session. But this ego-maniacal set of justices are prolonging our misery for one more weekend. Today, they gave us two unanimous decisions that make any reasonable person ask what these idiots are smoking! The first decision offered today was written by one of the "liberal" justices, Stephen Breyer. In NLRB v. Noel Canning,   SCOTUS decided the fate of "recess appointments." At issue: (1) Whether the President’s recess-appointment power may [...]

Blood, Sweat and Tears

Blood, Sweat and Tears is the theme for today's show. Not the band, but the reality that those are the main components of life in the US of A in the 21st Century. Too much blood, too many dead or maimed soldiers and civilians thanks to our military incursions, misplaced ire and weapons of mass destruction. Our labor woes since the Bush depression, with a recovery made up of jobs at half the salaries we had before the meltdown, and the vilification of the labor movement that brought about workplace safety,  a 5-day/40-hour work week, vacation time, sick leave and [...]
