A Bucket of Ice Water

When Homer Simpson joins in, you know you've gone viral. Although the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised awareness about the disease and a lot of money, there's so much we still don't know about it - thus the need for a campaign like this one. Homer challenged Donald Trump who actually dumped water on that thing on his head, proving that his hair really looks like that! I hope that dump also included a hefty donation! My favorite is still this 2-year old I'm pretty confident in guessing that most people didn't know what ALS was before this month [...]

Torture and Lies

President Obama admitted the US tortured "some folks" following the 9-11 attacks. Obama has used the word "torture" before to describe the harsh interrogation tactics used at CIA-run secret prisons during the Bush administration. But his words at a White House news conference were notably more direct than previous statements. The comments reflect the line the president is preparing to walk as he gets ready for the release of a Senate committee report on the Bush-era rendition, detention and interrogation program. According to the president, torture is not OK - but lying about torture is acceptable, as long as you [...]

News, Views and Muse

I was a bit worried that there might not be enough news to talk about with Congress going on a 5 1/2 week recess but, then again, it's not like they do anything when they're in session. But the drama that unfolded yesterday as they all attempted to leave DC was the perfect snapshot to illustrate the comedy of errors that the 113th Congress is. Adding to the absurdity of it all was Boehner's contention that President Obama, against whom the Speaker is filing a lawsuit over his use of executive orders, should use his executive powers to do something [...]

Shit Happens

As I explained in my previous post, I had a little fender bender yesterday. Thankfully, no one was hurt- but what a stupid, boneheaded move on my part. I was rushing to get to Randi's studio, was impatient, and couldn't stop quickly enough when I realized the cars in front of me where stopped dead. As much as I needed the money I'd get for filling in for Randi, unfortunately it will all go to pay my deductible for the damage, and then some. In addition, my main computer's hard drive is going, so I'll need to replace it - [...]

Monday Madness

It was a crazy day... a double header, as I got the call to guest host the Randi Rhodes Show shortly before hitting the air here at Radio or Not. And I had to take David to the airport in between the two shows... So, running late, I was rushing up to Randi's studio and rear-ended a car at a stop light. Completely my fault... Anyway... here's the podcast.  Marcy Wheeler (emptywheel.net) and Nicole Belle with Fools on the Hill® helped make the show interesting...

The News Has Been Canceled…and That’s the Way it Is

There is no more news. There's infotainment and speculation and opinion and lots of made-up shit all masquerading as "news," but make no mistake, the news has been canceled. Today's "news" casts on TV are anything but the objective, fact-based reports on the day's events they used to be. A Washington Post obituary of "60 Minutes" Creator Don Hewitt gets to the reason that the actual news can no longer be found on your television set: "60 Minutes" creator Don Hewitt, 86, who transformed television journalism by showing that news programs could generate money, and who helped make TV an [...]

Connecting with a Pakistani

You might remember during the Egyptian revolution, I called and spoke to a number of regular Egyptians - from hotel clerks, to Marwa Rakha, a woman who dispenses relationship advice online (and just gave birth to her son, Adam. on May 3 - a great day to have a kid.  It happens to be both my daughter's and my mother's birthday too!). Today, I reached out to Kaswar Klasra, a young man born and raised in Pakistan, he works as a journalist for The Nation (Pakistan).  Although it's difficult at times to understand what he's saying due to his accent, [...]

On HR3, Osama bin Laden, and Allen West’s Very Small Penis

Quite a show today... David Dayen, who always does a great job covering the news for FireDogLake, joined me near the top of the show to give the details on yesterday's passage of HR3 - the anti-choice bill - by the House of Representatives.  Sixteen so-called Democrats joined with all the Republicans to limit women's rights to control our own bodies. Where are the jobs, Mr. Boehner? Jason Leopold, deputy managing editor of Truthout.org, has done extensive investigative reporting on Guantanamo Bay, including exclusive interviews with former guards and detainees.  He joined the show this morning to cut through the [...]

Some Days Are Better Than Others

And on some days, the less said, the better. That said... today on the show, I reached out to listener Jeremy Boulat.  He's an American living in Japan.  He emailed me last month, after I asked who was out there listening.  Then, the earthquake hit, followed by the tsunami, followed by radiation fears from the crippled plants of mass destruction at Fukushima. Jeremy sent this email out to some of his friends last week: Dear friends... This is Jeremy. As you know, I live in Japan.  And recently, Japan we've been hit with a very huge, 9.0 magnitude earthquake. The [...]
