Awake the State!

Florida is in serious trouble. The people here voted a criminal into the governor's office, and he's doing his best to destroy the state.  So today, all over the state, there are rallies planned to Awake the State.  Click on the link and find a rally near you today. This morning, I spoke with Ray Seaman, online director of Progress Florida, and the guy who came up with the idea for Awake the State about the background and the many reasons we need it! Here's some info: Today is a big day for Florida. The 2011 Florida legislative session begins, [...]

Finally The Tables Are Starting to Turn

Yes, I'm still quoting Tracy Chapman.  It's only been 23 years since she wrote "Talkin Bout a Revolution," and finally, the tables are starting to turn. "Poor people gonna rise up and get their share".. I hope that happens. But the first steps have been taken. This weekend, people in every state in the nation took to the streets to say Enough!  Unfortunately, if you watched national or cable news, you didn't see much about it. Scroll down to the next blog post for my video from the USUncut protest at a Bank of America branch in Boca Raton, FL.  [...]

FloriDUH & the Need for Progressives in Politics

The criminal new governor of Florida, Rick Scott, introduced his budget this week.  Read all about it at the link, but here are a few of the highlights: Scott proposed spending almost $66 billion — $4.6 billion less than this year's budget. Scott also wants to eliminate 7 percent of the state's government jobs, which would mean about 6,700 state-worker layoffs. He wants even more cuts the following year... State Sen. Eleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood, noted the big cuts to education: $4.8 billion in the first year. She said that would hurt the state's children, its educational environment and the state's [...]

It’s 2011. Time To Get Back To Work!

Here we go. Welcome to the New Year. We certainly have our work cut out for us. I live in South Florida. Or, I should say, Flori-DUH. This is the state that elected a criminal as our next governor. Rick Scott's former company Columbia HCA (he built it from the ground-up) paid a record $1.7 billion in fines for Medicare fraud and pleaded guilty to 14 felony charges. Oh yeah, this is going to be interesting times in Florida. If you thought things couldn't get much worse, my new Congressman is the one and only Allen West. I'll talk Flori-DUH [...]

We’re Going to the Dogs

On Friday afternoon, twitter was all a-tweet with the news that MSNBC had suspended Keith Olbermann - INDEFINITELY! - because he had the hubris to donate to three political campaigns... without asking permission from the corporation first! That's the important part.  Not the fact that someone working for this news organization made a political contribution, but that he didn't ask permission first!  Seriously?!?!  This is the corporatocracy of which we've been warned.  (And the right screams of 'facism'? Seriously?) Well, after a weekend of hand-wringing and petition signing, MSNBC chief Phil Griffin this morning announced that Keith will be back [...]

When Politics Turns Ugly

That's what it looks like. Lauren Valle was trying to present Rand Paul with the "Republicorp Employee of the Month Award" as he was getting out of his car last night to enter the studios of Kentucky Education Television for the debate with Jack Conway.  Rand Paul's thugs tackled her and stomped on her shoulders and head.  See the video for yourself... What's even uglier are some of the comments on this right wing blog, who defend the violence! A quick shout out to KagroX, who this morning tweeted "Freedom of Speech for Juan Williams. Oh, hold on, I have [...]

The Final Stretch

We have just over a week before election day, and things are getting nastier by the minute. On today's show, I'll be joined by one of the few progressive heroes in Congress - Raul Grijalva - who is in serious danger of losing his seat. On Thursday, Grijalva's Tucson office was evacuated Thursday when a staffer opened an envelope containing a plastic bag of white powder and two pieces of paper with swastikas written on them. Nice, huh?  Yes, it's ugly out there... But we'll start the show with Jason Leopold of Truthout, who spent the weekend poring over the [...]

Filling in for Randi Rhodes today

Randi's headed to NY to guest on Joy Behar's TV show tonight, so I'll be filling in for her today.  And that's a good thing, as there's so much to talk about today... I ran out of time this morning on my show! We'll start the show with some examples of the opposite world in which the right lives.  In their world, up is down and wrong is right.  I'll give you a list of some examples, and then ask for your best instances of the right wing hypocrisy... My guests will include Howie Klein, who blogs at DownWithTyranny.com and [...]

Return of the Aqua Buddha, The Outlaws and More Monday Madness

Just when you though politics couldn't get any weirder, the Aqua Buddha returns, in all his chubby, wet glory. Actually, we have Jack Conway to thank for bringing back this very strange aspect of the very strange Rand Paul's past.  First, here's Conway's latest ad: Last night, the topic led off the debate between the two guys hoping to represent Kentucky in the US Senate... it was fireworks from the first word: And poor, insulted "Dr." Paul wouldn't shake Attorney General Jack Conway's hand at the end of it... Yikes. Although my favorite line of the evening came from Conway, [...]
