It’s Friday Ya Bastids!

No, I won't be bouncing my boobies today. Not that there's anything wrong with that... but that is Randi's thing. So, I'll defer to her on that one.  But I also thank Randi profusely for allowing me to speak into her microphone this week, and trusting me with her wonderful listeners. To close out the week, we once again have a stellar line-up of guests... We'll start off with the peace mom herself, Cindy Sheehan.  Cindy's in DC these days, leading Peace of the Action- -still working toward a peaceful world. John Nichols, Washington correspondent for The Nation, will be [...]

Another Broadcast Marathon Day…

So, I finished three hours on the air filling in for Randi Rhodes, and turned around and went for another two doing my show. Why?  Good question... I invited CIA agent turned novelist Barry Eisler to continue our conversation from Randi's show, to go a bit further in depth about his wonderful new book, Inside Out, and spies, and more. Ellen Ratner checked in with the latest news from the Talk Radio News Service. And John Fugelsang returned to make me laugh about things that I wouldn't normally find funny! Hey... good news for you Radio or Not podcast listeners [...]

Two Journalists, a Spy and and an Activist Appear on a Radio Show

Actually, it was a former spy turned novelist, and they were all my guests today on the Randi Rhodes Show. Journalist Dave Weigel gave us the scoop on his ouster from the Washington Post after a slimy member of a private email list released some of his more controversial statements made in private. That led into a discussion on the thin line between objective journalism and a reporters rights to voice his or her own opinion. I was thrilled to talk with CIA agent turned novelist Barry Eisler, as I just finished reading his latest novel, Inside Out, this morning. [...]

We’re Having A Heat Wave…

And I haven't heard a peep from the climate change deniers who were screaming that the winter storms were proof that the earth was not warming. Perhaps they're drowning in their own sweat. Well, I'm in Florida where it's always hot and humid this time of the year.  But we're also witnessing very strange weather patterns. We're actually NOT going to talk about the weather today, though it is the lead story on just about every news report today! I'm once again guest hosting the Randi Rhodes Show, and have another great slate of guests lined up. In the first [...]

A Marathon Broadcast Day

fter filling in for Randi Rhodes today, I continued with my show for the next two hours. We got an update from environmentalist Ted Glick, who joined me yesterday on Randi's show.  As Raw Story reports, Ted was convicted of two misdemeanors for unfurling two banners inside the atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building last September that read "Green Energy Now" and "Get to Work"!  He faced up to three years in prison at today's sentencing. Thankfully, Glick had a decent judge who gave him a suspended sentence with one year of probation, 40 hours of community service, and [...]

Thursday-Racism, Humor and BP’s Lies

My week ends on Thursdays, and I try to end it on a fun note. Today is no different, as John Fugelsang will join us -- as long as he doesn't get caught in traffic and have his cell phone battery die again.  But it has to get tougher and tougher for political comedians to be funny right now, as the word seems to be on a calamity course. I'm sure he'll live up to the challenge. In the first hour tonight, I'll speak with one of my favorite guests.  Tim Wise is one of the most prominent anti-racist authors [...]

Dueling Hearings and Day 71 of the Worst Environmental Disaster in History

Welcome to Tuesday, Day 71 of the BP disaster in the Gulf.  As if that's not enough, there's lots of other news to talk about today. It's also Day 2 of the Elena Kagan Supreme Court confirmation hearings. And General Petraeus was at his own hearing, getting confirmed by the Senate Armed Service Committee as the next commander of U.S. and foreign forces in Afghanistan. We played a bit of  "Dueling Hearings" on tonight's show in between interviews. It was an interesting collection of guests tonight. Billy Hayes, the guy on whose story the 1978 film "Midnight Express" was based [...]

It’s Monday, and Day 70 of the Gulf/BP Disaster

With no end in sight. Ugh. Aside from the ongoing tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico, today was a busy news day. Senator Robert Byrd died this morning. If nothing else, he should be remembered for speaking out against the war in Iraq. Check the bottom of this post for the video of that wise and prescient speech. The Supreme Court ruled against states rights on gun control. I guess we're returning to the wild west. Today is also the last day of this term of the Supreme Court, and the last day Justice John Paul Stevens sits on the [...]

Maybe the Mayans Were Correct

I finally did a little searching today to find out exactly what the Mayans predicted would happen on Dec. 21, 2012. It turns out that they did not predict the end of the world. According to USA Today, "For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot [...]

McChrystal Out. Now if we could only get out of Afghanistan…

He did it. The President actually showed some backbone and kicked McChrystal to the curb. Unfortunately, he put General David Petraeus back in to run the Afghanistan war theater; the same general who just last week said that the July 2011 date for beginning withdrawal of our troops was "nuanced." Grrr. We'll talk a bit about that on tonight's show.  And we've got a full slate of great guests joining in too. Christy Harvey of the Center for American Progress returns from a few weeks off. She'll bring some of the stories we might otherwise have missed. Although BP was [...]
