It’s Always About the Money

Last Thursday, a federal judge ruled that BP’s “gross negligence” and “willful misconduct” had caused the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 and that the company’s “reckless” behavior made it subject to fines of as much as $4,300 a barrel under the Clean Water Act. Antonia Juhasz, Oil and Energy Analyst and author of three books - Black Tide: The Devastating Impact of the Gulf Oil Spill, The Tyranny of Oil: The World's Most Powerful Industry--and What We Must Do to Stop It , and The Bush Agenda: Invading the World, One Economy at a Time - joined me on the show this morning to [...]

Solomon, Palast & Belle

No, Solomon, Palast & Belle isn't a law firm ... quite the opposite.  These three are people who do a lot of good - and happened to all be guests on my show this morning! We began with Norman Solomon, long time activist turned congressional candidate.  I always love talking with Norman, but wanted him on the show this morning so I could talk listeners into donating a few bucks to his campaign.  Extra impetus - your donation to Solomon's campaign (or to Dr. David Gill's) AT THIS LINK enters you into a drawing to win a Fender Stratocaster autographed [...]

It’s 4/20

A date that means different things to different people. April 20, 1889 Adolph Hitler was born. April 20, 1999 Columbine High School massacre. April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, starting the largest environmental disaster in US history. April 20 is also known as "Weed Day" as pot smokers around the world celebrate 420 (whether 4:20 or 4/20) as a time to indulge. I also mistakenly thought that today was Earth Day. But as I went to find just how many years Earth Day has officially been with us, I found that it is [...]

Taibbi Does It Again!

That's the cover of the April 15 edition of Rolling Stone magazine, one of the few magazines we still subscribe to here in this house.  Yes, I like the music, but it's the journalistic gems - most importantly from Matt Taibbi - that keep me coming back for more. Taibbi's latest, "The Real Housewives of Wall Street", gets behind the top-secret walls of the Fed and exposes massive, sickening giveaways of our tax dollars.  I won't paraphrase Taibbi, but instead tell you to click the link, read the story, and listen to our interview.  Yes, it will make you angry.  [...]

USA: We Do Big Things

Am I the only one who felt Jeffrey Immelt's influence here?  When President Obama proclaimed "We do big things," my mind went to the old GE commercials "We bring good things to light." Perhaps it was just me. But I do remember hearing that the Democrats were going to bring some Madison Avenue types in to help with their messaging.  If "We do big things" is the best they can do, they need to go back to Mad Men and try again. So much was made of the integrated seating at last night's State of the Union address. Democrats and [...]

Thanks to Earl, I filled in for Randi today

**Update** The podcast is posted. Sorry for the sound quality. It does get better toward the middle to end of the show... With Hurricane Earl threatening the eastern seaboard, Randi headed out of town.  As always, I was thrilled to fill in. I had a blast talking to Randi's listeners.  You guys are great... We covered a lot of territory.  Here's the info and the links as promised: Dr. Jeff Masters, director of Meteorology for Weather Underground was my first guest, giving us an update on Earl's trajectory. Journalist Dahr Jamail has been covering the BP disaster for a while [...]

Rewriting History

The President spoke last night from his newly refurnished Oval Office, declaring that combat operations have ended in Iraq.  Didn't we hear that somewhere before? OK, he didn't say "Mission Accomplished"  but he did say that combat operation in Iraq had ended. He also praised the guy that got us into that bloody mess in the first place. Seriously?! Tonight on the show, we'll listen to some of President Obama's speech, and dissect it with Jason Leopold, deputy managing editor at Truthout and editor-at-large at The Public Record.  We'll do that in hour two of the show. We'll kick things [...]

When Disasters Converge

This weekend, we'll see the media reporting on two disasters. I wonder which one will get more coverage? Sunday marks the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The devastation to New Orleans could have been avoided, yet apparently not much has been done to make sure there's not a repeat. On Saturday, some of the nation's most ignorant and intolerant will gather in Washington DC to desecrate the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the place he delivered, and on the 47th anniversary of his "I Have A Dream" speech. Glenn Beck is a fear monger of the worst [...]

Thursday with EPA Whistleblower and Crowded House

It's my last day of summer vacation.  My darling daughter returns home from three weeks away at summer camp tomorrow.  Unfortunately, my time without a child in tow was not much fun as I broke my foot the afternoon before depositing her at camp.  As much as I've enjoyed the respite from parental responsibilities, I can't wait to see my kid again... at least until she does something that makes me want to strangle her.  I give it around an hour... I get to spend my last night without worrying about what to do with her by seeing [...]

I’m Baack!

What a way to return, huh?  I was preparing to ease back into work slowly.  But shortly after I awakened yesterday morning, I got a call from Randi Rhodes' executive producer John Manzo telling me that Randi was sick, and asking if I could fill in for her.  Of course I said yes.  No way I'd turn down that opportunity... So, I sprung into action, and started reading and booking guests for the show. I had already planned to return to do my show last night...so I figured I'd do another marathon broadcasting day.  Unfortunately, it took its toll on [...]
