Mr. Hayward Goes to Washington

Unfortunately, it was actually Tony Hayward and not Jimmy Stewart in Congress today. In what was an otherwise mostly worthless exercise, there were a few moments of excitement. When Tony Hayward was finally sworn in and began his testimony -after more than an hour of gratuitous opening comments by the committee members - Code Pink's Diane Wilson, who happens to be a shrimper, jumped up with oil on her hands and face screaming "you need to be charged with a crime!" Then, the questioning began. Unfortunately the answers were few and far between. Consisting mostly of "I don't know" and [...]

Scientists Warn Gulf of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured “Beyond Repair”

I talked about and read some of this article on the show tonight. Although the facts seem to be there, and the characters mentioned in the article are real, there is ample controversy surrounding the author. So, take this with a grain of salt.  Obviously, we don't know what's happening a mile below the water's surface, and this scenario is as likely as not... -NS Scientists Warn Gulf Of Mexico Sea Floor Fractured Beyond Repair Contributed by Sorcha Faal // Thursday, June 10, 2010 8:38 View: Contributor's biography | More stories By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western [...]

The President Went to the Gulf, and All We Got was a Lousy Speech!

I put my thoughts about the president's speech in writing last night. Just scroll down to yesterday's blog to read my anger.  Of course, on today's show, I had a bit more to say.  We listened back to some of the pertinent points and did some fact-checking too, with a little help from the AP. I also opened the phone lines and took some calls... We checked in with Harvey Wasserman, author of  Solartopia! whose latest missive, "Corporate Apocalypse vs. Solartopian Survival" is on FreePress.org and other sites today.  We spoke about what President Obama could have and [...]

Up Oil’s Creek Without a Paddle

I generally write this blog after my show, and use it to reiterate a few points and give the info on the content and guests.  I'll do all of that... But immediately after the show ended, it was time to tune in to President Obama's speech from the Oval Office regarding the biggest man-made environmental disaster in history. Today, government panel of scientists set up to examine the flow from BP's blown out well said that between 1.47 million and 2.52 million gallons of oil is still gushing from the underwater geyser in the Gulf of Mexico every [...]

They Spent $70k on a Cell Phone?

With the divide between the rich and the rest of us growing wider each day, it's no wonder this story sent me into a slight tizzy this weekend. This is so seriously outlandish there's no way you could make it up. This company Vertu, a division of Nokia, is actually selling cell phones for $70,000 a pop.  And some people are actually buying them.  (Yes, those are indeed diamonds surrounding the phone.) In fact, people with way too much money on their hands include Quincy Jones and Seal, both outed in this piece as truly stupid, ostentatious exhibitionists.  If they're [...]

When Will They Ever Learn?

It's the end of another week at Radio or Not, and a tough week it was! The big primary day on Tuesday was a bummer for those of us who thought we were heading for a progressive push.  Blanche Lincoln somehow eked out a win in the primary to run to to keep her Senate seat in November, beating her challenger Bill Halter. And Blue Dog war monger Jane Harman somehow defeated the progressive breath of fresh air that is Marcy Winograd so she can keep her big corporation money loving ways going for another two years in the House [...]

Broken Voting, Broken Gulf

On tonight's show, we covered both of these problems that are in need of major fixing. We started the show with Brad Friedman who's done yeoman's work on voting issues for years, and yesterday had his own issues trying to vote in LA. It's all documented at BradBlog.com, but we talked about that as well as the voting problems in Arkansas. Jack Rice called in with an update from the Talk Radio News Service, and we wound up talking about those same voting issues and more from yesterday's elections, the disaster in the Gulf, and the sanctions against Iran. I [...]

Irony Alert- Day 50 of the Spill is World Oceans Day

Isn't it ironic, don't you think? It's Day 50 of the worst man-made environmental disaster in the world which will destroy the Gulf of Mexico for, optimistically, at least a generation.  The disaster began on Earth Day and today, Day 50, happens to be World Oceans Day.  It's a truly bad situation and it only seems to be getting worse! Tonight, I'll spoke with the wonderful Dr. Riki Ott, a marine biologist who's been camping out in the Gulf since the disaster began and must be feeling a bit of deja vu, as she was in Alaska when the Exxon [...]

Helen and Elton and Oil, Oh My

***Quick update: The show is over and I'm still floored by the interview with Rabbi Nesenoff, the man who asked Helen Thomas the question that led to her resignation this morning. Now, in addition to feeling sorry for Helen, I feel sorry for this man who I think gives Rabbis a bad name, and shows why there's so much Antisemitism in this country today.  As a Jew, I hate what Helen said, but really despise the situation that's causing the fighting.  My interview with Rabbi Nesenoff comes at about 30 minutes into the podcast, which you can hear by clicking [...]

Day 45 and Counting…

When the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on Earth Day - April 20 - I don't think any of us ever thought we'd be here today, talking about the disaster it started. But here we are, 45  days and somewhere around 185 million gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf later, we're hearing more BP horror stories and seeing horrific images of of birds and marine creatures dead and dying. It's the unimaginable, but it's real. And with each passing day, it's more and more apparent that no one - not BP, not the government - NO ONE KNOWS [...]
