Secrets and Lies

The old saying goes, "Information is Power." So the powerful don't want you to have information. They keep secrets and continuously lie to us. The most blatant example of that is the Trans Pacific Partnership negotiation process. It's been done in total secrecy and we've been lied to about what's in it.  Just consider why a "trade deal" would have to be top secret. Last week, while we were metaphorically stuck on the George Washington Bridge with Chris Christie, a bill was introduced by Max Baucus in the Senate and Dave Camp in the House that would rush the TPP [...]

No Slow News Day – Barney Says Good-Bye

The morning began with the news that my favorite congressional curmudgeon is retiring.  Barney Frank has announced he will not seek re-election next year.  Such sad news, as the House of Representatives is surely a finer place with Barney's no bullshit approach to his job. I only had the opportunity to interview him once.  It was June of 2009, and I was hosting a late night show on Air America.  Since I was on so late, I would record some of the interviews earlier in the day.  That was the case with Congressman Frank.  But I don't think he knew [...]

Talking About What’s Really Important

That's what I try to do every morning on my show.  Unfortunately, the news has been cancelled in favor of ratings, and the media is obsessed with appealing to the basest of instincts - peoples' preoccupation with the sex lives of others. Yes, we've been talking about Anthony Weiner too, as his fall from grace and his stupid propensity for thinking with his little head instead of his big one is THE most talked-about piece of "news" today. Rachel Maddow covered the hypocrisy of the right's demanding his head (so to speak), by pointing out their obvious flawed belief: IOKIYAR [...]

The News Has Been Canceled

You cannot get a real news report via broadcast or cable news any more.  With the exception of a few shows, it's corporate controlled drek through which one must wade to try to pull some facts.  But the truth is, there's so much news to discuss.  I just wish some of it was good. The word from Japan seems to get scarier by the minute.  As most of the coverage on the TV is about the disaster there, I figured today would be a good day to focus on some of the stories not getting any attention here at home. [...]

Good Night and Good Luck

I'm still stunned and angered by Keith Olbermann's surprise announcement at the end of his show Friday evening proclaiming that he "had been told" that evening's edition of "Countdown" would be his last. Although part of me is excited to see what he'll do next, I'll miss my nightly 8pm date with the man who speaks truth to power better than just about anyone else. I do believe January 21 is a date cursed.  On Friday, I bemoaned the first anniversary of the Supreme Court's heinous ruling in Citizens United v. FEC which opened the floodgates for corporate donations to [...]

Ding Dong DADT is Dead!

We witnessed history this morning, as President Obama asserted that all men and women are created equal, and signed the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell into Law! As I write this post (delayed because I was watching the ceremony live), I'm playing back my interview with Lt. Dan Choi, recorded this summer at Netroots Nation. I have no guests booked for this morning's show, as I knew we'd be celebrating this huge step forward for civil rights. I'm not sure what else today's show will bring... we'll see what happens over the next couple of hours.  You [...]

The Tuesday Randi Rhodes Show

As you know by now, I'm filling in for Randi Rhodes for these last two weeks of the year.  Yesterday, we listened back to some of the news from January, as we started on our journey through the past year in the rear view mirror...  Today we'll venture back through February and March. Once again, we'll be joined by Tim Karr of FreePress.net and SaveTheInternet.com, who was at today's FCC hearing and vote on their new "net neutrality" regulations.  I put that in quotes because, unfortunately, it's fake net neutrality.  The Washington Post has this wrap-up of today's meeting here. [...]

Working Hard… or Hardly Working

As much of America is taking off for the holidays, some of us are lucky to be working, filling in for the vacationers.  That's the category I fall in to. I'm thrilled that, once again, Randi Rhodes has given me the honor of talking with her listeners while she enjoys some well-deserved rest and relaxation. In addition to being thankful for the work (and the paycheck!), I'm glad that I can continue my tradition of listening back to some of the highlights -and lowlights- of the year that's ending... It's our Rear End Year in Review (or something like that)...  [...]

GOP Lacks Compassion Gene

That's the only way I can rationalize the way the 21st century Republican party operates.  It's leaders don't give a damn about anyone who can't contribute big bucks to their continued political ascension or help fatten the bank accounts of their cronies. With the help of professional liars like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and everyone at Faux News, they've snookered the lemmings into taking to the streets to fight against their own best interests. I can't find who said it originally, but the thought "never underestimate the stupidity of the American people" rings truer today than ever before... Mitch McConnell [...]

Sen Bernie Sanders & Digby on today’s show!

It doesn't get a whole lot better than that! Tune in bright and early, as Senator Bernie Sanders will be with me just moments after 10am ET, when the show begins.  There's so much I'd like to discuss with him but, since our time is limited, I'll tackle an issue that's near and dear to me and, apparently, to him too. When MSNBC suspended Keith Olbermann, these words came over my computer via Sen. Sanders' twitter feed: " There already is far too much media concentration in this country. We need more diversity, more local ownership, more viewpoints..... Progressives know [...]
