Special Select Friday Show

I haven't been doing any shows on Fridays for the past few years. But obviously, things are rapidly changing in the progressive talk radio field. Randi Rhodes' show ended last Friday, and today, Ed Schultz will end his radio show. Over the past few months, the downloads, views and listens to the podcast, live show and video archives have been steadily growing. I decided a while ago that if you come, I'll build it! So today, I decided to test the waters with a few interviews I'd already recorded but hadn't yet had the time to play on this [...]

Opposition World

The ugly part of politics is the politics.  "Oppo Research" is an ugly necessity for anyone in a campaign. You have to know who your opponent is, especially the ugly parts of their history. It's the ugliest part of the ugly side of politics, which is in itself, usually an ugly game. But not all candidates use the oppo research they gather in the same way.  There are some unspoken "gentlemen's rules" - but it seems as if Mitch McConnell doesn't know or care. Mother Jones, the go-to magazine if you have a surreptitious recording to leak these days, [...]

The Truth About Crist

Although I don't often quote Politifact, I couldn't help but agree with their summation of Charlie Crist's penchant for "elasticity" in his stance on, well, everything... Charlie Crist and "never wavered" are words that don't seem to naturally fit together these days. He vetoed anti-abortion legislation in June 2010 after painting himself as fiercely pro-life. He buddied up to Sarah Palin during a "Drill, Baby, Drill" event in 2008, then called for a special legislative session to ban oil drilling in July 2010. Most famously, he abandoned the Republican party after pegging himself as a both a Jeb Bush and [...]

Silver Lining

It's difficult to think of anything coming out of the horrific massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut as "good" - but today, we learned of a silver lining on the cloud that's been hanging over the nation since December 14, 2012. I was joined on the show this morning by the Speaker of the Connecticut House, Brendan Sharkey, who told us about the new gun legislation that will come up for a vote there tomorrow.  When it passes, and it should - easily - it will be the toughest gun legislation in the country. The proposal includes [...]

Now is the Time

President Obama went big yesterday with his proposals on gun safety.  With 23 Executive actions and proposed legislation that he'll send to Congress as soon as tomorrow, he's stepped up to try to keep Americans safe from people with weapons of war. There are a few things that we, as concerned citizens, must do: Read the proposals put out by the White House.  It won't take you long, and being informed is the first and most important step to combating the insanity from the gun nuts. Call your representatives.  If you don't know who your Congressman is, click here to [...]

Fiscal End Times

Just about a year ago, I was reading about Modern Monetary Theory (or MMT).  I know, quite out of character for me.  But the Washington Post  ran a big story about MMT, and it was being widely shared on the interwebs.  I found it fascinating. Right around the same time, listener Sefantiza suggested I interview Warren Mosler on the show. Mosler, featured prominently in the Washington Post article, is an economist, president and founder of Mosler Automotive, and co-founder of the Center for Full Employment And Price Stability at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He briefly ran for President of the United States as [...]

I’d Take Away The Guns

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120723_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_Id_Take_Away_the_Guns.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   Some idiot on twitter just took issue with my use of the term "assault weapons". The neanderthal in question then excoriated me for blocking its feed rather than "learning" from it. Seriously. Call it a rifle, machine gun or weapon of mass destruction, I don't really care. We're not talking semantics. We're talking life or death. And for 12 people in Aurora, CO on Friday just after midnight, it was death at the hands - and weapons - of a madman.  As the song says,  Maybe it's the [...]

If It Were Up To Me, I Wouldn’t Have to Play This Song Again

I'd take away the guns.... In case you haven't yet heard about today's tragedy ... At least 12 people are confirmed dead and another 50 were taken to area hospitals after a gunman - armed with an assault rifle, shotgun, two hand guns and, reportedly, two canisters of some sort of gas - opened fire inside a packed movie theater in Aurora Colorado during the midnight premiere of the new Batman movie. Although I had played the song a few times on the air at the then-awesome radio station KSCA (fm 101.9) in Los Angeles, it wasn't until the horror of [...]
