Governor Did a Bad Bad Thing

Maureen McDonnell spent $6,000 around the time of Bob McDonnell's January 2010 inauguration and complained to the PAC the family did not have enough to finance her first lady wardrobe - Photo courtesy of AP Guilty! Actually, she's guilty of spending $50, let alone thousands on that dress. But that's not why they were convicted.  A federal jury on Thursday found former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, guilty of public corruption — sending an emphatic message that they believed the couple sold the office once occupied by Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson to a [...]

Saving the Planet – And Ourselves (04/22/2014)

It's Earth Day, and the prognosis for our planet isn't great. We've passed 400 parts per million of carbon in the atmosphere, high above the 350 ppm from which 350.org took its name - signifying the maximum levels we can sustain if life is to survive on earth. As Dr. James Hanson,  former head of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. and one of the most respected climatologists in the world, said of our situation: “If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that [...]

Gimme Some Truth

I'm sick and tired of hearing things From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics All I want is the truth Just gimme some truth Ive had enough of reading things By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians All I want is the truth Just gimme some truth -- John Lennon John Lennon's brilliant "Gimme Some Truth" should be required listening for all who aspire to elected office and all who purport to report the news. But because the lies come at us from every quarter and from those in position of power and authority so often, life often seems like a perpetual telling [...]

Get Up, Stand Up!

An activist dressed like a polar bear protests against the Keystone XL oil pipeline outside The White House in Washington February 3, 2014. (Reuters / Yuri Gripas) Yesterday, just a few days after the State Dept released it's latest report on the Keystone XL pipeline, opponents took to the streets in some 3o0 cities across the nation to say "Hell No!" This Saturday, many thousands are expected to join in the Moral March in Raleigh, NC. In Kiev and other cities in Ukraine, protesters are taking to the streets and risking their lives for their rights! When I [...]

Hate In the Name of God

It's become something of a theme this week...  but it's unavoidable these days.  Let's just consider a few of the day's big stories, shall we? Rafael Cruz (Ted's father), a "Pastor" in the Purifying Fire Ministries of Carrollton, Texas, though I can't find any information about that particular "church" online), has some some truly hateful things including this, this and this. Here's his latest, proclaiming atheism leads to child molestation and perversity: Then there's word salad Sarah, the former half-term governor of Alaska, who is worried that the Pope is too liberal. And Pat Robertson, a man who claims to have [...]

Scary Monsters & Super Creeps

It's Halloween, the one day each year the monsters come out among us.  Unfortunately, they're out every day in Washington DC doing their best to hurt the most vulnerable in society.  They usually masquerade as Republican members of Congress, but lately they seem to have taken off their masks. They're cutting $5 billion from the SNAP (food stamp) program, and trying to keep the poor, average person from getting decent health insurance at a reasonable price. The list goes on and on.... just remember, they're monsters. Big thanks to Chris Hayes for putting the spotlight on the food stamp cuts [...]

DOMA is Dead

It was nice of the Supreme Court to wait until I returned to issue their ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act.  Even better of them was ruling that DOMA is unconstitutional! As I flew in late last night from Los Angeles, I'm a bit jet-lagged and out of it, but attempted to bring you the rulings as they were announced - courtesy of SCOTUSblog.  And Jacob Combs of Courage Campaign and Equality on Trial joined in with some perspective too. You can read the actual DOMA ruling here - with Justice Kennedy writing the opinion for the majority! [...]

Countdown to Cuts, Climate Change, Media Madness and Drones

As you can see from the picture above, the GOP has taken to calling the cuts mandated by the Sequester "Obamaquester".  But this slide from a John Boehner-delivered Power Point presentation appears to show that it was the Speaker who wanted it! At the Daily Beast, John Avlon reports  I happened to come across an old email that throws cold water on House Republicans’ attempts to call this “Obama’s Sequester.” It’s a PowerPoint presentation that Boehner’s office developed with the Republican Policy Committee and sent out to the Capitol Hill GOP on July 31, 2011. Intended to explain the [...]
