It’s Money that Matters

Today on the show, we talked about money.  Well, the real topics were campaign finance reform and the Oscars... but it all boils down to dollars and cents. The Supreme Court is set to hear another case involving campaign contributions.  McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission is being called Citizens United 2.0, as the GOP wants to lift the limits on the aggregate amount of money an individual can contribute directly to candidates and to their party.  I spoke about it and the progress made to undo the Citizens United damage with a constitutional amendment with Move To Amend's David Cobb. Note [...]

Seneca Falls, Selma and Stonewall!

Today is President Obama's 2nd Inaugural, MLK Day, the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, and the third anniversary of Citizens United and the end of Air America. Nicole talk about all of those, and speaks with Toi Hutchinson, running for Congress to fill Jesse Jackson Jr's old seat. Plus Nicole Belle with Fools on the Hill

SCOTUS Blotus

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120627_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_SCOTUS_Blotus.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window I have to make this post quick, as I'm heading out the door to drive to Randi Rhodes' West Palm Beach studio to guest host her show this afternoon.... so I'm just going to tell you who was on the show this morning, who'll join me this afternoon, and what you need to do right now! In the wake of the Supreme Court's horrible ruling in January 2012 on Citizens United, and its equally heinous decision on Monday in overturning the ruling on the Montana Supreme Court that disallowed [...]

It’s the Supreme Court Stupid (aka Obama 2012)

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120626_Nicole_Sandler_Show_.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window   While most of the corporate media spent all of yesterday talking about whether the Supreme Court's ruling on the constitutionality of Arizona's SB1070 was a win or loss for the Obama administration, they were missing the boat on the truly devastating decision handed down by the highest court in the land. In American Tradition Partnership, Inc. v. Bullock, according the summary at SCOTUS blog, the court overturn[ed] a Montana Supreme Court decision upholding a 1912 voter-approved ban on corporations’ spending of their own money on political campaigns in that [...]

SCOTUS: The Good, The Good, and The Very Ugly!

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120625_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_SCOTUS_Part_1.mp3 {/play} Podcast: Play in new window As my show started at 10am ET, I had one eye glued to the SCOTUSblog live blog coverage of their decisions.  There was a very good decision today in the ruling that said juveniles couldn't be given life sentences without the possibility of parole.  There was another good decision, for the most part, on Arizona's SB1070, which struck down most of that heinous law, but kept the "paper-please" portion (though without commenting on what should be done with the information that someone stopped is or is not in the country legally). [...]

Citizens Inundated, Prop 8 Ruling and @GottaLaff too

Today's show will cover a lot of territory... We'll speak with FreePress.net's Tim Karr... A lot of listeners have asked about ACTA and its supposed role as the more evil step-sister of SOPA/PIPA.  So, I asked Tim to join us to tell us about it, as he's my arbiter of all things internet.  He'll give us what little he knows about it, as ACTA is NOT US legislation... The NY Times had a good piece on ACTA on Sunday, "A New Question of Internet Freedom". What Tim has been working on lately is a study on the effects of the [...]

Dylan Ratigan and John Fugelsang!

I know that Dylan Ratigan can be a bit polarizing. But today was the second time I've interviewed him, and I find him refreshingly honest and one of the few people who's not afraid to speak the truth. He joined me this morning to talk about his new book, Greedy Bastards, the need for real campaign finance reform and getting money out of politics entirely, and his Get Money Out organization merging with United Republic to effect real change. In case you need a reminder of the fire in Ratigan, remember back to August of last year: As if that [...]

10 Years of Hell on Earth

Ten years ago today, the first 20 prisoners, or detainees as they are now known, arrived at the US base at Guantanamo Bay.  Over the course of 10 years, that prison has held 779 "enemy combatants".  Labeled thusly, they were somehow allowed to be held indefinitely and without charges. Today, 171 detainees remain. Nearly half of them have been cleared for release, but there are no plans to release them.  President Obama, by signing the NDAA on Dec. 31, 2011,  has made this indefinite detention the law of the land.  The United States now legally can hold these prisoners - [...]

Saving Democracy (or Bernie Sanders is My Hero!)

Here I am in Washington DC with a free day!  Yes, there was a march from the mall up to the Capitol and a group of people went in to try to see John Boehner (his office called the police and the citizens were told to leave or they'd be arrested). As I was standing at the labor rally calling for good jobs in the shadow of the Capitol, an email arrived from Senator Bernie Sanders' office alerting me that he had introduced the first constitutional amendment in his entire congressional career.  It's called The Saving American Democracy Amendment, and [...]
