Not One More

Richard Martinez is my hero. In the wake of the worst tragedy of his life, the murder of his only son, Martinez understands that his grief can spur change, and that he only has a brief window before our attention turns elsewhere. From the first time we saw him crash the Santa Barbara Sheriff's presser to call out the "craven politicians and the NRA" as being responsible for his son's death, to the numerous interviews in which he's spoken so eloquently, to yesterday's memorial at UCSB where he got tens of thousands in attendance to take to their feet to shout [...]

#YesAllWomen and “Chris’s Dad is Right”

I started seeing the #YesAllWomen hastag on Twitter sometime over the weekend. Even when a few people Tweeted telling me to follow it, I didn't make the connection between that and the massacre in Santa Barbara on Friday evening. I found the Tweets fascinating, and began searching for the story behind it. Though I still don't know where it started or by whom, the message is resonating with millions of people globally. I came across a beautiful essay this morning in The New Yorker, written by Sasha Weiss, "The Power of #YesAllWomen" . In the piece, Weiss tells how the hashtag [...]

Memorial Day- Remembering Those Killed in Battle and On Our Streets

On Memorial Day, we remember those killed in battle. I think that now includes those who were gunned down on the streets of Anytown, USA. On Friday night, it was the Isla Vista community at UC Santa Barbara. You probably didn't hear about the three people killed and two wounded in two separate shooting incidents yesterday in Myrtle Beach, SC . If you think mass shootings happen way too often in the US, you'd be correct. If your stomach can handle it, read Mother Jones' "Guide to Mass Shootings in America", updated on May 24 to include Santa Barbara. Sadly, [...]

Special Select Friday Show

I haven't been doing any shows on Fridays for the past few years. But obviously, things are rapidly changing in the progressive talk radio field. Randi Rhodes' show ended last Friday, and today, Ed Schultz will end his radio show. Over the past few months, the downloads, views and listens to the podcast, live show and video archives have been steadily growing. I decided a while ago that if you come, I'll build it! So today, I decided to test the waters with a few interviews I'd already recorded but hadn't yet had the time to play on this [...]

Protect Your Radio

Just shy of a week after Randi Rhodes said goodbye to her radio show, Ed Schultz announced he's ending his radio program too. I have no idea what the circumstances are surrounding this decision, but I am disappointed that he gave no notice, leaving stations to scramble, and that he didn't do this before Randi left the air, as there's the possibility, with time opening up on some stations, that her should could have survived. Either way, that's water under the bridge now...  I understand that Thom Hartmann will now move his show back to the noon-3pm ET time slot, [...]

Happy Moral Populists

A group of young Iranians showed their "Happy" side by dancing in a video to Pharrell Williams catchy smash hit song.   Unfortunately, I guess being happy is illegal in Iran. Susie Madrak of Crooks & Liars joined me this morning to talk about this truly sad story. Three men and three women danced unveiled to Pharrell Williams' smash hit in a video that was widely shared on social media, garnering over 30,000 views before it was taken down. Copies have been quickly re-uploaded as news of the arrest has broken, sparking the hashtag #FreeHappyIranians. Many Iranians praised their joyful video, [...]

Cutting Through the Bullshit

"Political discourse" and "Bullshit" are synonymous these days. It often feels like we need a dictionary to decipher and unpack some of the drivel that comes out of politicians mouths.  Enter my old friend Stephen Goldstein. He's an op-ed columnist for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and author of a number of books including one of my favorites, Atlas Drugged: Ayn Rand Be Damned. And now, he's back with The Dictionary of American Political Bullshit! It's a must-read, especially in today's political climate. Stephen joined in for a spirited discussion about bullshit this morning, and we had a spirited debate about [...]

Moving Onward

Randi Rhodes broadcast her final program on Friday. I'm hoping she'll come back - but, for now, she's done. I was honored to be in the studio on her last day. Not that I was invited, mind you. I just showed up. As I told her, I just couldn't imagine sitting at home listening. So, I got her a balloon and a card and a bottle of champagne... and it was the definition of bittersweet. But move forward we must... so, on the show today, we looked to the future. Congressman Alan Grayson was on with me in the first [...]

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Let’s Make Sure It’s Streamed!

In his masterpiece, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,"  Gil Scott-Heron offers an unbridled indictment of the failure of the corporate media, which has only gotten exponentially worse in the four decades since we first heard it. An updated version would certainly include some reference to today's predicament. Senator Al Franken calls the fight for Net Neutrality "the free speech issue of our time" . Presidential candidate Barack Obama promised that he'd always support and would only appoint FCC commissioners who'd uphold his belief in the need for a free and open internet. So, WTF is going on with Chairman Tom [...]

Oy FloriDUH!

Although we covered a lot of news on the show today, we were earily consumed by one particularly engrossing story, that of Florida Congressman Joe Garcia who was earnestly engaged in the House Judiciary Committee's hearing on the government's surveillance programs. This sad display was not the only reason we pulled out the Oy FloriDUH fanfare today. Oh no. And the other story isn't nearly as amusing... First, a bit of background. Earlier this week, a new report courtesy of NASA told us what most of us already suspected: a rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears [...]
