Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Nicole kicks off another week with Howie Klein on the political landscape three weeks before election day. Aaron Krager was in Ferguson over the weekend for #FergusonOctober, two months after Mike Brown was killed. Plus an update on the high school threats last week.

You Oughta Know

Nicole wraps up another week with Heather "Digby" Parton talking about the latest news and what we all need to know. For Flashback Friday, we go back to Sept of 1995 when Jagged Little Pill was at the top of the charts with Alanis Morissette's visit with Nicole at LA's KSCA fm 101.9

We Have To Do More!

Guest post by Billy Wimsatt who joins me on the show this morning at 10:30ET. Listen live or come back later for the podcast.   I'm freaking out about the Senate. I woke up this morning and thought: WE HAVE TO DO MORE!!! I'm freaking out BOTH because Mitch McConnell controlling the Senate is terrifying AND because I believe we can stop it. Looking at the FiveThirtyEight Senate Forecast, there are at least three races likely to be decided by somewhere between 1 vote and 17,000 votes.     Iowa has been a 1 point race consistently since June (the Republican is ahead). That translates to roughly 11,000 votes we [...]

Take the Threats Seriously

Americans have really short memories. It was less than a year ago that the Republicans shut down the US government for 16 very long days. And now Mitch McConnell is threatening to do it again. I suggest we take those threats very seriously. To refresh our country's collective memory loss: First, Federal employees were furloughed for a combined total of 6.6 million days, more than in any previous government shutdown. At its peak, about 850,000 individuals per day were furloughed. That number fell once most Department of Defense civilian employees were able to return to work as the Pentagon implemented the [...]

What a Way to End the Week!

If only I could start every weekend like this! I know it's only Thursday, but I don't do a show on Fridays, so my weekend begins when this blog and podcast are posted. Let's begin with the good stuff. Shenna Bellows! The former Executive Director of the  ACLU of Maine turned senatorial candidate is challenging Susan Collins for the seat Collins has occupied for 18 years. She's been making a lot of news in the past few days: Bellows just yesterday submitted many more than enough signatures to get her on November's ballot, earned the endorsements of both the Progressive Change [...]

“We’re Not Asking America To Go To War”

Those words were just said by Secretary of State John Kerry during his opening statement before the House Foreign Affairs Committee's hearing on the Authorization for Use of Military Force in Syria.  I guess that depends what his definition of "is" is.  To me, firing multiple cruise missiles at another nation is, indeed, war. And as the members of Code Pink are demonstrating in the screen grab above, we'll all have blood on our hands too.  As my mother always tried to impress upon me, "Two wrongs do not make a right." This morning, I spoke about yesterday's Senate [...]

Absurdity Thursday

Stepping away from my usual "opposite world" meme - in honor of Absurdity Today's Julianna Forlano's regular Thursday appearance, we deem today "Absurdity Thursday". I started this morning's show with the intention of lightening things up after a really awful week.  But as the show progressed and we talked about the stories we didn't get to earlier in the week, I realized that each was more absurd than the last... from McDonald's starting a financial planning site (be sure to look at the numbers they filled in on page 4)  to show their obscenely underpaid employees that they can, indeed, support a [...]

Worst Week Ever?

The week actually got off to a good start!  I spent the weekend at a wonderful music festival, and hit the ground running Monday morning with Alan Grayson on the show and feeling good. Then all hell broke loose in Boston. As bad as the actual explosion of two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon was, the lies and insanity that were presented as "news" made it even more disgusting. The worst perpetrator had to be the Rupert Murdoch-owned NY Post, Wall Street Journal and Fox "News" Channel: The "Saudi National" never officially called a "suspect" nor [...]
