Moving Onward

Yesterday's Supreme Court ruling allowing explicitly Christian prayers to open town council meetings across America struck a blow right down the line separating church and state, further taking America back to the days before the Declaration of Independence. Veterans Day – What Are We Fighting For?

Every year on November 11, we honor our nation's veterans.  It was just 18 months  ago that, as we were approaching Memorial Day, that Chris Hayes came under fire for saying that not all who fought (and died) in war were necessarily heroes. Stop Watching Us

The revelations keep on coming!  As thousands took to the streets in DC over the weekend, telling the administration and the NSA to stop watching us, we learned that - in addition to listening in on Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel's personal phone calls, the NSA monitored 60 million phone calls, texts and emails in Spain in one month! The GOP is at it again.  That bastion of social welfare, the Heritage Foundation (they must be an organization devoted to doing work in the realms of Religious, Educational, Charitable, Scientific, Literary, Testing for Public Safety, to Foster National or International Amateur Sports Competition, or Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Animals as they enjoy tax-exempt status under their 501(c)3 designation, right?)  wrote a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor urging them to stop doing the work they were sent to Washington to do in favor of ratcheting up "scandals" in the Obama administration. The Real Scandal

Last night at my daughter's softball game, I was chatting with one of the other moms about our daughters entering high school in the fall.  The other mom told me that her daughter was joining ROTC because she's always wanted to go into the military.  I smiled gently and just said "I hope that we're not fighting any wars by the time she graduates."  But hidden behind my tentative smile was the sadness in knowing that if this young woman does join the military, she has a greater than 1 in 4 chance of being raped while serving her country.
