Happy Festivus to the Rest of Us

It only comes but once a year. Today is Festivus! We dealt with it briefly on my show this morning, and will commence the airing of the grievances this afternoon on The Randi Rhodes Show!  So get your lists ready and prepare to call in to 866-877-2634 between 3 and 6 EDT this afternoon. We'll speak with Chaz Stevens, the Florida blogger who planted the Pabst Blue Ribbon Festivus Pole in the FL Capitol rotunda (next to the display from the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster!) And since today is the deadline to enroll in an insurance plan via the [...]

Double Header Wednesday

Busy day today! I just finished my show this morning and am now getting ready to head up to West Palm Beach to guest host for Randi Rhodes... So bear with the brevity of this update. On my show today, I spoke with Vivek Tiwary, a ridiculously successful Broadway producer (with lots more to his list of accomplishments as well), whose new book - a graphic biography - The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story -  is a NY Times bestseller and soon to be a major motion picture! Susie Madrak joined in from her perch at the newly re-designed [...]

Counting Down Till the End of the Year

It's that time of the year again... Randi Rhodes is enjoying some well-earned end of the year vacation time, and I get to enjoy her vacation by guest hosting her show! Jacob Dean and Skeptical Scott of Filter Free Radio will be guest hosting my show on Monday and Tuesday for the next three weeks.  I'll be here Wednesday and Thursday this week, and Thursday the two weeks after that...  and in for Randi each day between now and January 3 with the exception of Christmas and New Years Days. Today on Randi's show, I'll talk with Congressman Alan [...]

When News and Myths Collide

Although that's how Hollywood depicts Jesus, history tells us he didn't quite look like that.  But don't expect to hear facts from your favorite newsmodel at the Fox "News" Network.  Fox's "Rising Star"™ Megyn Kelly tells us that, in response to a Slate piece entitled "Santa Claus Should Not Be A White Many Anymore": "...for all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white, but this person is just arguing that, that maybe we should also have a black Santa. But you know, Santa is what he is and just so you know, we're just debating this cuz someone [...]

“Shake More Hands, Drop Fewer Bombs”

I think I said it all yesterday, except for the "I told you so." Even John Stewart went off on how ridiculous the criticisms of the Handshake that Shook the World were... The Daily Show Get More: Daily Show Full Episodes,The Daily Show on Facebook But if you listen all the way to the end, you'll hear John Stewart say that the "selfie" (actually taken by the Danish Prime Minister of herself, President Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron) "kind of fucked up." No Jon. What's fucked up is the holier than thou attitude of the pundits (yourself included) [...]

I awoke this morning to President Obama speaking at the huge memorial for Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa. As he tends to do, Obama delivered a masterful oratory, filled with just the right words and emotions. But the one moment that's getting the most attention is the brief handshake he shared with Cuba's Raul Castro. The usual haters (read: Republicans) on Twitter are spewing the usual venom, like this: Whoa! An enthusiastic handshake AND another bow to Raul Castro. http://t.co/2oYw6XmONE @abcnews @CBSNews @NBCNews @nytimes @FoxNews #tcot — Right Wing Jewess (@RightWingJewess) December 10, 2013   Of course, Marco Rubio [...]

At Least We’re Not Freezing!

So we've got that going for us. This weekend, I attended the "First Annual" Lauderdale Live Music Festival.  I put "first annual" in quotes because the organizers were confident enough to include that in its promotional materials, but given the anemic attendance, I can't imagine there will be a second annual outing. And that's too bad. I was surprised when I saw the lineup, as bands I love like Lyle Lovett, Indigo Girls and Robert Randolph don't often venture down to these parts. We have no decent radio who'd ever played any of those artists, and a weird population mix [...]

Soothing the Savage Beast

If there's been a theme running through this week's shows, it's been the nastiness with which those who sit on the opposite side of the political aisle from me (and, likely, you if you're reading this and listening to my shows) interact with us. It began with a tweet from a stranger to me. Out of the blue, this troll pops up on my twitter page to post @nicolesandler When you produced M&B it was all about risk & freedom & now you're a socialist?. Brian adored Ayn Rand, WTF happened to you? — Tom Cruz'n (@TinPotDickTator) December 2, 2013 [...]

Wellness Wednesday

With the deadline rapidly approaching (Dec 23) in order to be covered with health insurance on Jan 1 - and the news that the healthcare.gov website is now working (for the most part), success stories are beginning to emerge. We got one this morning from Crooks and Liars' Susie Madrak, who regularly joins us on Wednesday mornings! She was able to get through and sign up yesterday for coverage that will cost her less than she's paying now, and will cover more. Yes, she's happy. I wasn't sure how Donna Smith would respond when I asked her about the Affordable [...]

Giving Tuesday

I like the concept of "Giving Tuesday" - especially in the wake of the crass commercialism of the past few days (not to mention the coming three weeks!).  Today, we'll be giving lots of stuff to  Women in Distress here in South Florida. I encourage you to find a great organization to give to today - perhaps check out Ellen Ratner's Goats for the Old Goat - and,  of course, your giving is always welcome here to help support our work at Radio or Not! Today, I was joined by an old friend of the show, Kevin Zeese. He's one of [...]
