Proof that hypocritical GOP cares nothing about protecting us from ISIS

For years, Rachel Maddow has been reporting on the willful obstructionism of Republican Congress members on all kinds of Democratic bills and, of course, any and all things proposed by President Obama. And with each GOP block, we Dems have become angrier and more frustrated. But now.I mean.Come on.Now. Now it's deadly serious. Now it's even more urgent. Now it's a matter of national security. The hypocrisy on the right is jaw-droppingly, stupidly, nauseatingly blatant, especially in light of all their chest pounding, big "tough" talk, belittling of President Obama's policies, faux bravado, threats, and misguided compulsion to "carpet bomb" Daesh (AKA ISIS, Islamic [...]

“Climate change ‘was not an issue at all, literally no salience with voters.'”

Ever feel like you're screaming, "Fire!!!!" in a burning building and nobody's listening? Check this out from the Los Angeles Times, and then link over to read the rest. It's an article about the millions Tom Steyer spent on climate change awareness in Tuesday's election, and of course, backing candidates who are not so comatose that they ignore what's happening to our planet: The GOP takeover of the Senate occurs as the science of climate change has grown more definitive and the predictions of widespread effects more detailed and dire. On Sunday, a panel of hundreds of climate scientists convened by [...]

Religion and Politics Monday

Today we did what you're not supposed to do in polite company: talk religion and politics. Then again, I never said we were polite around here. We began with religion, courtesy of Bill Maher, Sam Harris and Ben Affleck  with a little Michael Steele and Nicholas Krisof thrown in for good sense ...   Although I agree with most of what Affleck said, he needs to learn to shut up once in a while and let others speak. Religious scholar Reza Aslan took issue with Maher's prior Islamophobic rants... Although Upworthy cited lots of sources that back up Azlan's [...]

We’re paying a cowardly Congress to do nothing as bombs drop

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy As long as Rachel Maddow continues to spotlight Congress's disappearing act, I'll continue to post her rants. Above is her latest. Our Congress has not nearly as much interest (as the UK) in this matter. [Boehner] doesn't want this existing Congress to debate military action, he wants it to be the new one, the next Congress, as in, "the one that isn't elected yet" that will convene next year in 2015. Now that the war has started in Iraq and Syria, and they say it will be a years-long [...]

“Whenever lawmakers are ready to show up again to perform their jobs…”

Once upon a time I posted this: Eric Cantor's 2014 House schedule allows for even MORE time off. I wrote that post because I was utterly exasperated with endless Congressional vacations and the resulting lack of accomplishing any, you know, lawmaking. Congress members take more recesses than elementary school kids, yet it's the kids who seem to have a better work ethic than our elected officials-- who we continue to pay to do absolutely nothing, just by the way. Rachel Maddow pointed that out in this post, Why everybody would like to be a member of Congress: Lots and lots of time off. Lots: "Nice deal right? ... [...]

Pagan Celebration!

Finally! Today marks the Vernal Equinox... or the beginning of Spring. Silly non-religious folks (like me) tend to celebrate these days- when we enter a new phase of planetary alignment with the sun- rather than religious holidays based on a book written a few thousand years ago. Yet somehow the pagans who join together to celebrate nature at Ostara Festivals around the world - and pre-date Christianity! - are considered the odd balls. Welcome to opposite world. It's somehow fitting that Fred Phelps, the founder of the hate-spewing Westboro Baptist Church, died on one of the biggest pagan holidays [...]
