Death & Taxes (and FloriDUH too)

We trot out the wisdom of Franklin each year as we pay our share of keeping this country going. I believe any patriot would be more than willing to pay their taxes to insure that the infrastructure is kept up, and the citizens protected. Unfortunately, those priorities seem to be low on the totem pole that has military spending taking up a ridiculous percentage of the hard-earned dollars most of us fork over every year. It's sad and maddening that the wealthiest people and corporations in the US get the biggest tax breaks, while those of us struggling to get [...]

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is April 15. It's s double-whammy this year. Not only is it tax filing day, but it's also the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. It's easy to understand why I just want to crawl back in bed and pull the covers over my head. This year, I got my taxes done early. Unfortunately, I owe the IRS a lot of money. The reason why is might surprise you. Due to financial hardship, I had to take my savings out of my IRA. Obviously, I saved that money fully intending to use it after I retired. Unfortunately, life [...]

Happy Thanksgivukkah!

It's a holiday that none of us will ever see again, as Thanksgiving and Hanukkah won't arrive on the same date again for another 78,000 years or so.  So, let's celebrate! On the show, I talked about a few things for which I am very thankful. As I adopted my daughter Alison 14 years ago this month, and November is National Adoption Month, I once again welcomed my friend Robert Lamarche to the program.  We first met seven years ago when he contacted my show to ask if I'd consider a segment on adoptions... and we've talked every [...]

We’re Going to Disneyland!

That's what you do after a big victory, right?  I still remember one year when I took my daughter to Disney World here in Florida.  She couldn't have been older than six.  On our way to park, we learned that day was "Gay Day" - an annual event.  My first thought was "cool, this could be a learning experience".  Except that my daughter was not at all fazed by the site of two men or two women holding hands. She had never been taught that there was anything wrong with that! This weekend, we're headed back to Disney World. [...]

Channeling My Inner Howard Beale

That's who I felt like today, ranting and raving about the madness that's taken over, seemingly, EVERYTHING! From the bullshit about Benghazi, to the wrong outrage over the IRS, to Apple and others dodging their taxes, to cutting programs for the neediest among us, to the epidemic of sexual assault in the military, to the dysfunction in Washington, to the warming of our planet, to the vilification of teachers and civil servants and union members, to wimpy appeasing politicians....  I could continue, but I think you get the idea.  We talked about all of these subjects and more today with [...]

Scandalous!

The GOP is at it again.  That bastion of social welfare, the Heritage Foundation (they must be an organization devoted to doing work in the realms of Religious, Educational, Charitable, Scientific, Literary, Testing for Public Safety, to Foster National or International Amateur Sports Competition, or Prevention of Cruelty to Children or Animals as they enjoy tax-exempt status under their 501(c)3 designation, right?)  wrote a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor urging them to stop doing the work they were sent to Washington to do in favor of ratcheting up "scandals" in the Obama administration. [...]

The Real Scandal

Last night at my daughter's softball game, I was chatting with one of the other moms about our daughters entering high school in the fall.  The other mom told me that her daughter was joining ROTC because she's always wanted to go into the military.  I smiled gently and just said "I hope that we're not fighting any wars by the time she graduates."  But hidden behind my tentative smile was the sadness in knowing that if this young woman does join the military, she has a greater than 1 in 4 chance of being raped while serving her country. [...]

Scandal-Gate Spate

The Republican party has been fishing for a scandal, and now they've got one... or two, but not three, and one of them is not the scandal they've been pushing! The scandal is not in Benghazi, and it has nothing to do with Benghazi.  Sadly, four Americans lost their lives there.  But if rewriting talking points a dozen times before they're released by a governmental agency then we're in really big trouble. Benghazi was a tragedy exploited by Fox and its minions to thrust a scandal upon the Obama administration, with the added value of discrediting the potential 2016 Democratic [...]

Benghazi Tourette’s

If you happened upon a "news" program on TV this weekend, you likely noticed the latest affliction affecting Beltway Republicans.  They've all come down with an odd strain of Tourette's Syndrome in which the verbal tic is "Benghazi".  The neuropsychiatric disorder  appears to have infected only the GOP brains that were already a bit off to begin with, but it's spread with such ferocity that containment at this point seems unlikely... that is, until the next overblown nontroversy arises. We'll get to Nicole Belle's take on what went down on our TV sets yesterday in just a moment... But first... [...]
