News, Views and Muse

I was a bit worried that there might not be enough news to talk about with Congress going on a 5 1/2 week recess but, then again, it's not like they do anything when they're in session. But the drama that unfolded yesterday as they all attempted to leave DC was the perfect snapshot to illustrate the comedy of errors that the 113th Congress is. Adding to the absurdity of it all was Boehner's contention that President Obama, against whom the Speaker is filing a lawsuit over his use of executive orders, should use his executive powers to do something [...]

The News Has Been Canceled…and That’s the Way it Is

There is no more news. There's infotainment and speculation and opinion and lots of made-up shit all masquerading as "news," but make no mistake, the news has been canceled. Today's "news" casts on TV are anything but the objective, fact-based reports on the day's events they used to be. A Washington Post obituary of "60 Minutes" Creator Don Hewitt gets to the reason that the actual news can no longer be found on your television set: "60 Minutes" creator Don Hewitt, 86, who transformed television journalism by showing that news programs could generate money, and who helped make TV an [...]

What a Way to End the Week!

If only I could start every weekend like this! I know it's only Thursday, but I don't do a show on Fridays, so my weekend begins when this blog and podcast are posted. Let's begin with the good stuff. Shenna Bellows! The former Executive Director of the  ACLU of Maine turned senatorial candidate is challenging Susan Collins for the seat Collins has occupied for 18 years. She's been making a lot of news in the past few days: Bellows just yesterday submitted many more than enough signatures to get her on November's ballot, earned the endorsements of both the Progressive Change [...]

Stranger than Fiction

From the Truth is Stranger than Fiction files this morning: McDonald’s advises its low-wage workers to try “breaking food into pieces” to feel full, and urges them to “pack your bags” for vacation, “chew away cares” with gum, “keep the faith” by going to church, and “sing away stress.”  And, oh yeah, return some of those Christmas gifts to get the cash! In response to criticism over Walmart employees holding a food drive for fellow Walmart employees, the company is pushing back.  And it's Ashton Kutcher to the rescue! A freshman teaparty congressman from Florida, Trey Radel, was busted buying [...]

Our Future Depends On You

That's the message I got from today's interview with Ray McGovern. Things are fucked up and only massive public protests and civil disobedience can turn this nation around.  Unfortunately, I think people are too busy just trying to survive themselves, with little energy left to help save the the USA. McGovern spent 27 years at the CIA, working for nine CIA directors. Primarily a substantive analyst and briefer, he nonetheless served in all four of CIA's main directorates and, during one of his postings abroad, helped manage a large covert action project. In January 2003, he co-founded Veteran Intelligence Professionals for [...]

Why Aren’t We Talking About Drones?

That's one of the questions I asked Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin on the show this morning.  It was actually an inaccurate question, as she certainly is.  Her new book is called Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control and, as usual, she's on the road out and about protesting against all the things that are wrong with our nation... from unjust wars to environmental ruin and beyond. We talked about Medea's surprising but wonderful appearance protesting at Wayne LaPierre's sickening "press conference" after the Newtown massacre, President Obama's nominee for CIA director John Brennan and his complicity in torture and [...]

Time for Allen West to Retreat

I actually backed Allen West on his right to a recount.  This is, after all, FloriDUH, and we don't know how to count ballots here.  If the situation were reversed, I would have demanded a recount on behalf of his opponent. So, after two judges denied his request, the St. Lucie County canvassing board decided a recount of all the early voting ballots was called for.  And after the count, Patrick Murphy's lead increased by 200 votes. So, Mr. West, it's time for you to leave. Now... So much to talk about today.. we'll unwind the Petreaus scandal (is [...]

Get More Progressives In Congress!

That's the answer. The question is "What the fuck do we do now?" We have no recourse when it comes to the top of the ticket. The choice is bad or worse.  So our best recourse is to stack Congress in our favor.  We can elect more progressives, and we must. Good news came on Monday when Alan Grayson made it official and announce he's running for Congress again. Now we just need to clone him 50 times... Congressman Grayson joined me on the show today. I was really planning to make it just a friendly, happy, help [...]

Biting the Hand that (Potentially) Feeds Me

I was tuning in the shine on the light night dial Doing anything my radio advised With every one of those late night stations Playing songs bringing tears to my eyes I was seriously thinking about hiding the receiver When the switch broke 'cause it's old They're saying things that I can hardly believe They really think we're getting out of control Radio is a sound salvation Radio is cleaning up the nation They say you better listen to the voice of reason But they don't give you any choice 'cause they think that it's treason So you had better [...]
