News, Views and Muse

I was a bit worried that there might not be enough news to talk about with Congress going on a 5 1/2 week recess but, then again, it's not like they do anything when they're in session. But the drama that unfolded yesterday as they all attempted to leave DC was the perfect snapshot to illustrate the comedy of errors that the 113th Congress is. Adding to the absurdity of it all was Boehner's contention that President Obama, against whom the Speaker is filing a lawsuit over his use of executive orders, should use his executive powers to do something [...]

Big Morning Boehner

We haven't whipped out a Morning Boehner in a while, but there was a big one waiting for us today. Speaker Boehner yesterday led his crazy caucus on a Quixotic mission to sue the president to “to seek appropriate relief” for Obama’s failure to enforce a provision of the Affordable Care Act that would penalize businesses that do not offer basic health insurance to their employees. Neither Boehner, nor anyone else in House leadership would say that this lawsuit is not a step towards impeachment. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi went there during her time on the floor before the vote.  When I [...]

Death & Taxes (and FloriDUH too)

We trot out the wisdom of Franklin each year as we pay our share of keeping this country going. I believe any patriot would be more than willing to pay their taxes to insure that the infrastructure is kept up, and the citizens protected. Unfortunately, those priorities seem to be low on the totem pole that has military spending taking up a ridiculous percentage of the hard-earned dollars most of us fork over every year. It's sad and maddening that the wealthiest people and corporations in the US get the biggest tax breaks, while those of us struggling to get [...]

Double Header Wednesday

Busy day today! I just finished my show this morning and am now getting ready to head up to West Palm Beach to guest host for Randi Rhodes... So bear with the brevity of this update. On my show today, I spoke with Vivek Tiwary, a ridiculously successful Broadway producer (with lots more to his list of accomplishments as well), whose new book - a graphic biography - The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story -  is a NY Times bestseller and soon to be a major motion picture! Susie Madrak joined in from her perch at the newly re-designed [...]

Surrender!

As today's show was in progress, the news came trickling out that Speaker John Boehner would finally relent and allow the Reid-McConnell bill to end the shutdown and raise the debt ceiling to come to the floor for a vote, even if it means violating the asinine "Hastert Rule". But as the show ended at noon there were still some soap opera cliffhanger worthy questions hanging in the balance: Would Ted Cruz hold up the vote? Would the House vote before the Senate? We now know the answer to the first... No.  After Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell gave their [...]

Everything is Broken

Thank goodness for good headline writers! Unfortunately, that seems to be the only thing I'm applauding today. On the show this morning, I realized just how totally FUBAR we are.  While the government is shut down over a manufactured crisis (yet, again), the people who've been silently suffering in this country continue unabated... and their numbers continue to grow. Sasha Abramsky is an author and journalist who spent the last two years plus traveling the nation, seeking out the mostly-invisible poverty-stricken masses.  Unfortunately, what he found is hiding in plain site in every state in the nation, and no one [...]
