Get Away!

I never thought I'd quote Glenn Beck, but there's a first time for everything. The moron of mid-morning radio (and now the interwebs too) actually said something I can agree with.  Well, OK, it was only a fraction of the entire quote in which he ragged on Sen. Marco Rubio for supporting immigration reform and accused him of being a (gasp!) progressive Republican.  As a Floridian, I can promise you that there is nothing progressive about Mr. Rubio.  Anyway,  Glenny said "Get away! Get away!  Otherwise, brother, we’re going to have to send you away.” The rest of it was [...]

We’re Going to Disneyland!

That's what you do after a big victory, right?  I still remember one year when I took my daughter to Disney World here in Florida.  She couldn't have been older than six.  On our way to park, we learned that day was "Gay Day" - an annual event.  My first thought was "cool, this could be a learning experience".  Except that my daughter was not at all fazed by the site of two men or two women holding hands. She had never been taught that there was anything wrong with that! This weekend, we're headed back to Disney World. [...]

DOMA is Dead

It was nice of the Supreme Court to wait until I returned to issue their ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act.  Even better of them was ruling that DOMA is unconstitutional! As I flew in late last night from Los Angeles, I'm a bit jet-lagged and out of it, but attempted to bring you the rulings as they were announced - courtesy of SCOTUSblog.  And Jacob Combs of Courage Campaign and Equality on Trial joined in with some perspective too. You can read the actual DOMA ruling here - with Justice Kennedy writing the opinion for the majority! [...]

Once More On Equality

This morning on my show at Radio Or Not, we recapped yesterday's historic day at the Supreme Court.  Shane-O was there for both days of hearings on marriage equality, and joined in during our regular Talk Radio News segment to fill us in on what he saw and heard. The best part of the day for me, not being inside the Supreme Court, was hearing Edie Windsor talk about her battle. (Windsor's comments come in at the 7:30 mark) Julianna Forlano joined me in the first hour of this morning's show to talk about this week's hearings and other stories [...]

Equal Rights for All

That picture is my friend Asher Huey.  I don't think Asher is ready to get married yet, but when he is, it will be to the man with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life.  His right to marry the person of his choice is what's at stake-- what the Supreme Court is hearing arguments about, what they may rule on in the next few months. It is the civil rights issue of our time. We've been dealing with it all week on both this show and as I've been filling in for Randi Rhodes on her [...]

The Beginning of a Long Week

Last week's diversion into the troubled mind of Michelle Shocked was, in a sense, a fitting introduction to this week in which the Supreme Court will hear two cases that deal directly with Marriage Equality. Tomorrow and Wednesday will bring challenges to California's Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, respectively.  We'll cover both here on my show in the morning, and on the Randi Rhodes Show in the afternoon..  Yes, it's double-headers all week long... This morning on my show, music journalist Chris Willman will join in to give the postscript on the very sad Michelle Shocked saga. [...]

We’ve Come A Long Way Baby, or Have We?

This afternoon on The Randi Rhodes Show, I'll be joined by a couple of guests who'll reflect on the progress made in 2010 by the LGBT community and women. The unflinching activism of the group GetEqual is widely credited for making the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell a reality. Heather Cronk, managing director of GetEqual will join us to talk about how they got it done, and what's next. What strides have women made this year? We're on the cusp of 2011, and still don't have an Equal Rights Amendment.  But we do have a third woman on the [...]

It’s Friday Ya Bastids!

No, I won't be bouncing my boobies today. Not that there's anything wrong with that... but that is Randi's thing. So, I'll defer to her on that one.  But I also thank Randi profusely for allowing me to speak into her microphone this week, and trusting me with her wonderful listeners. To close out the week, we once again have a stellar line-up of guests... We'll start off with the peace mom herself, Cindy Sheehan.  Cindy's in DC these days, leading Peace of the Action- -still working toward a peaceful world. John Nichols, Washington correspondent for The Nation, will be [...]
