1-20-16 Nicole Sandler Show – The Clash Over Campaign Cash

It's a busy day on the show, as Nicole Sandler hosts The Clash over Campaign Cash, a debate between Move to Amend's David Cobb and Shaun McCutcheon, who won his suit claiming aggregate limits on the amount of money an individual can contribute to a political party or the number of Federal candidates is unconstitutional at the Supreme Court. In the first hour, Nicole welcomes Tim Canova, the law professor and political activist challenging Debbie Wasserman Schultz in the primary. And Deborah Newell joins in for our Wednesday morning dip into the Oy FloriDUH files too.

4-28-15 Nicole Sandler Show – From Baltimore to the Supreme Court

It's a day of dueling stories - hope and joy at the Supreme Court as the justices hear the case that could lead to marriage equality across the land. And Baltimore burns, as protesters mourn the loss of another unarmed black man to police. GottaLaff joins in to discuss the dichotomy. And David Cobb of Move to Amend on the fight to get money out of politics...

The Shit Has Hit the Fan

And here we are.. a nation of lawyers, guns and money. The lawyers argue before the courts, who decide that money rules all. And mentally ill people with guns go on shooting rampages. Today on the show, we continued discussing the ramifications of the Supreme Court decision in McCutcheon vs FEC - with David Cobb, national spokesperson at Move to Amend  and David Gans of the Constitutional Accountability Center.  Move to Amend has been building a movement to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United (and now, too, McCutcheon) which would explicitly state that corporations are not people and [...]

It’s Money that Matters

Today on the show, we talked about money.  Well, the real topics were campaign finance reform and the Oscars... but it all boils down to dollars and cents. The Supreme Court is set to hear another case involving campaign contributions.  McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission is being called Citizens United 2.0, as the GOP wants to lift the limits on the aggregate amount of money an individual can contribute directly to candidates and to their party.  I spoke about it and the progress made to undo the Citizens United damage with a constitutional amendment with Move To Amend's David Cobb. Note [...]

Busy Day Yesterday…

Sometimes there are too few hours in the day!  I'm just now getting around to posting yesterday's show (one more reason why you should subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or Stitcher..)...  Just as we were hitting the air for my show I got an email asking me to fill in for Randi Rhodes.... And Alison had a softball game last night (yes, we live in Florida - and it's the playoffs with another game tonight!) So, here I am taking a break from show prep for today's show to post yesterdays, along with links... On my show, I was [...]

A Tale of Two Cities Occupied (or Not)

Occupy LA evicted by LAPD - 11/30/11 Photo: newsone.com In Los Angeles, the tensions began rising at around 8:30 PM, as word spread throughout the encampment that a raid was imminent. Luckily, some intrepid tweeters and bloggers were on the job... Brad Friedman was tweeting and updating BradBlog.com throughout the night - so much so that he was still awake on the west coast when I awoke on the east coast. Brad's updates on his blog ended at 3:30 am PDT (6:30 EDT!) with this entry: 3:31am PT: Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck give a verybrief statement to media. [...]

What a Difference a Year Makes… Or Not!

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of a day I'd prefer to forget. Perhaps it's a good thing that I don't do a show on Fridays. But I'll suck it up and deal with it today. On the afternoon of January 21, 2010 the Supreme Court handed down their ruling in Citizens United v. FEC, a ruling that undid over 100 years of settled law regarding the financing of campaigns and opened the floodgates for corporate control of elections. Later that afternoon came word that Air America radio had filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and ceased operations. No, it was not a [...]

The Political Tango

Politics is a dance.  More often than not, it's infuriating.  But it's the biggest reality show out there, where the winner gets the power.  And we're just in time for the fall season. I started tonight's show talking about the Florida Senate race.  I've stated before that I'm in a quandary.  Kendrick Meek is the Democrat, and also happens to be my Congressman!  The problem is that I'm not a big fan of his.  I don't dislike him either, but I don't think he's been particularly effective.  And then there's the name that doesn't scream fighter!  I also think he [...]
