2011… Buh Bye

I'm guest hosting the Randi Rhodes Show all this week! In addition to talking with some great guests, we're re-living some of the more notable moments of 2011 during our annual year in review. The talented folks at JibJab put it all to music too... Today on Randi's show, we'll listen back to the news from May and June. And we'll talk with Lisa Graves of the Center for Media & Democracy about their big project of 2011- ALECexposed, and the effect ALEC had on voter suppression laws. In hour two, I'll be joined by one of the most influential [...]

It’s the End of the Year as We Know It

Well, for me on The Nicole Sandler Show anyway... I'm guest hosting the Randi Rhodes Show Fri 12/23 and Mon-Fri 12/26-30.  Shane-O will hold down the fort here on my show next week... In the meantime, on this show I finished up our annual year in review, and chatted about the year gone by with John Fugelsang. See you later!

What Is In the NDAA That You Should Worry About!

I've spent the last two days digging deep into this story.  Yesterday on the Randi Rhodes Show, I interviewed Congressman Raul Grijalva and Congressman Keith Ellison, both of whom expressed concern over the provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act that allow for indefinite detention of anyone suspected of being a terrorist .. or even a terrorist sympathizer.  That applies to both citizens and non-citizens. I also spoke with Politico's Josh Gerstein who had posted "On National Defense Authorization Act, Obama Pulls Veto Threat" while the show was in progress. On the House floor Wednesday afternoon, lawmakers disputed the impact [...]

Senators Carl Levin & Sheldon Whitehouse – WTF??!?!

I get that John McCain would author a bill that would allow everyday US citizens to be indefinitely detained by the military and held without charge.  But Senator Carl Levin? Et tu? Apparently.  The two authored the Levin/McCain  bill, aka Section 1031 of the National Defense Authorization Act  ...   Actually, as the ACLU reports: The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee [...]

The Day Before Thanksgiving

I'd certainly be thankful if President Obama would state, unequivocally, that the peaceful, non-violent protesters have a constitutional right to assemble and speak out about whatever bothers them. And more importantly, he needs to state that the recent pepper spray attacks and other violence perpetrated upon the protesters by law enforcement officers is WRONG, and must stop now. In the meantime, if you'd like your own military-grade pepper spray, you can get it on Amazon.com.  Just check out the hundreds of product reviews like these: 3,702 of 3,764 people found the following review helpful: Accept no substitutes when casually repressing students, November [...]

When the Bad Deeds of a Few Destroy the Good Work of Many

The people of Oakland California stood up for their rights yesterday, and most of them did it following the rules of the Occupy movement: peaceful, non-violent protests.  That's the message the stalwart members of Occupy Oakland wanted to present yesterday and, for most of the day, that was the picture.  Unfortunately, as in any large crowd, there are a few who want to play by their own rules. Some anarchists and perhaps provocateurs infiltrated and broke some windows, sprayed graffiti, and spread the wrong message.  But they were the minority of the marchers participating in yesterday's general strike. This is [...]

Walking the Talk – All the Way to DC

I do a lot of talking every day, but I'd never ask my listeners to do anything I wouldn't do myself. For a few months, I've been spreading the word about the October 2011 movement. And recently I've been telling you about the Take Back the American Dream conference, organized by the Campaign for America's Future, Van Jones' American Dream movement, and MoveOn.org. I'll be attending both next week, as I head to Washington DC. In my absence, Shane-O of the Funked in the Head show will be filling in for me, and [...]

Earthquakes and Hurricanes and Rick Perry, Oh My!

Natural disasters all.. or I guess we could consider Rick Perry an unnatural disaster!  The latest Gallup poll has Rick Perry jumping ahead of the GOP pack after one week of declared candidacy...  He's 12 points ahead of Romney in 2nd place.  The invisible-to-the-media Ron Paul is in third, with Michelle Bachmann a distant fourth. Strange times in which we're living, huh? As bad as the current crop of candidates offered by the Republicans might be, it's still a rough road ahead for President Obama's re-election.  He has some problems... We've talked about them at length, including on Monday's Randi [...]

This Is Not My America

It would be really funny if it weren't so scary.  The tea baggers scream about their liberties being taken away - but they support the party that wants to do away with our 4th amendment rights to privacy, that wants to control who can marry whom, what a woman does with her own body, that wants to squelch voter's rights, that support the truly anti-democratic idea that corporations are people and money equals free speech... and many more liberty killing laws the right is trying to foist upon us. I've experience the assault on our freedoms personally. Arrested after attempting [...]

April Fools

It is April Fools Day and, to celebrate, I've invited some of the best political comics to join me on today's Randi Rhodes Show. But before we get to the line-up, allow me to share with you some of today's news items that should be April Fools pranks but, unfortunately, are not... The DUH is emphasized in Florida, as a democrat is chastised on the House floor for daring to utter the work "uterus." Mike Huckabee suggests that we'd be in a better place if only all Americans were forced, at gunpoint, to be indoctrinated by listening to some right [...]
