“We’re witnessing the end of the [Republican] party”– Trump Immigration Round-Up

In case you've missed some of the recent news spotlighting the Donald Trump ignorance, dishonesty, narcissism, bigotry, and bluster that passes for his newest version of an immigration policy, here are a few highlights. Please watch the videos all the way through, they're worth the time it takes, which isn't all that much.   Here we go: Via the Los Angeles Times' Cathleen Decker: Nothing in his speech served to expand his reach among minority Americans. For some Republicans who have worked for decades to diversify their party, the result felt apocalyptic. Mike Madrid, a California GOP strategist who has [...]

What I will not write about today

Sometimes I get so frustrated and/or disheartened and/or annoyed by some of the news stories of the day that I can’t bring myself to write about them. Here are a few recent reports that made my blood pressure hit the roof. I am avoiding delving into them at length out of concern for my physical and mental health. Many of us were seething at the press (not just the "mainstream media," but also pundits on the right and the left) for their praise of Donald Trump's trip to Mexico. They actually called him "presidential." No, I'm not kidding. Some approval cranked [...]

Trump: Making America wait again

Trump now not expected to take questions in Mexico, despite his campaign manager insisting this morning he would. — Steve Peoples (@sppeoples) August 31, 2016 Maybe Trump's concerned that they'll ask him: Where Mexico is on a map For his tax returns Where his hats are made For a comprehensive breakdown of the cost of that wall he's promised to make Mexico pay for About those former models he knowingly hired and profited from when they "came to the United States on tourist visas that did not permit them to work here" Whether or not he'll actually show up at the presidential debates [...]

Here are a few recent reports that made my blood pressure hit the roof. I am avoiding delving into them at length out of concern for my physical and mental health. Cattle pens, threats of violence, blacklists, total lack of access. Time for journalists to say: Enough is enough! Transparency by and access to presidential candidates? Respect for the First Amendment? What could my pal Will Bunch be thinking? The actual author of [...]

Trump’s dangerous appeal: He’ll take care of us

Photo via Slate This post is not as thorough as I'd like, because my attention is divided today, but jotting down a few thoughts will help get these feelings out of my system. Please bear with me. Trump's done it. He's compelled me to write about him in a way I've resisted for a very long time: Comparing him to Hitler. I consciously resist references to Hitler in general because so many people throw those around way too often, way too casually, and way too inappropriately. But after watching Trump's speech on the final night of the fiasco that passed [...]

Bittersweet

Many of us can do two things at the same time, like, say, walk and chew gum. It takes practice, but we've managed to master that skill. So it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that we Bernie supporters can celebrate that a woman, for the first time ever, is our presidential nominee while still disagreeing with her policies. Yes, like it or not, Hillary Clinton is the presumptive Democratic nominee; a woman can finally claim that victory and that's a 'uuuuge deal. While I've never been an identity voter or even a single issue voter, I fully and enthusiastically acknowledge [...]

All Hill breaks loose #StillSanders

I'm a lifelong Democrat (sadly, that may change, we'll see) and an enthusiastic Bernie Sanders supporter. For the past year I've been asked repeatedly, "Will you vote for Hillary Clinton if she's the Democratic nominee?" And for the past year I've answered yes. Over and over and over again. Yes, yes yes. However...A year ago, I hadn't yet encountered the continual onslaught of abuse, baiting, smears, and harassment on social media by Hillary supporters. I hadn't yet observed the former Secretary of State's campaign tactics, positions (many have been contradictory, misleading, or obfuscatory). I hadn't yet watched her debates with Senator Sanders. [...]

Why a feminist who “connected with Hillary” is voting for #BernieSanders

Deborah Newell (of the blog Litbrit) is a regular guest on the Nicole Sandler radio show, as am I, although we've never been on together. But we do keep in touch in various ways. One way is through a listserv (a private email group of progressives) on which Deborah wrote the following on why she, a diehard feminist, is voting for Bernie Sanders. It took some serious thought, introspection, and scrutiny of Hillary Clinton's policies before Deborah made that decision. Her personal story and experiences that led her to support Bernie Sanders touched me so deeply that I felt compelled to share. [...]

VIDEO: Bernie Sanders corrects the record on his Medicare for All plan

Yesterday I posted Bernie Sanders in his own words on health care. cc: Chelsea, a rebuttal to claims made by Ms. Clinton about Bernie Sanders' health care plan. I included two videos and some links. I don't usually jump in like this, nor do I like to exacerbate Dem vs Dem conflicts. However, I made an exception here because there are statements out there that are not accurate and need attention.Today, Senator Sanders was interviewed by MSNBC's Thomas Roberts about those very misrepresentations. Here is Sanders correcting the record in his own words:And via TPM:During an interview on CNN following the [...]

Bernie Sanders in his own words on health care. cc: Chelsea

Chelsea Clinton: Bernie will "dismantle Obamacare, dismantle the CHIP program, dismantle Medicare, and dismantle private insurance"— ryan cooper (@ryanlcooper) January 12, 2016Bernie Sanders has already debunked that, erm, misrepresentation by Chelsea Clinton, since none of those things would be necessary once we had his single-payer system in place. Chelsea made it sound as if these things would go away, not be covered. That's not accurate. But just to drive the point home, here are a couple of videos to clarify his positions. Here is Sanders on health care at the Brown & Black Democratic Presidential Forum, in his own words:  You can also go to my previous [...]
