19 Railroad Cars of Oil Blew Up … and Left Still Burnin’ in West Virginia
In 2015. This isn't some Depression Era cautionary singalong. Happened the day before yesterday. Seriously. Neon mushroom clouds that the locals had, prior to this oil-rail debacle, only seen in movies were West Virginians first clue that more snow than usual was not their worst problem this February. Their worst problem was this: a regular-route, thought to have 'modern' tank-car-hauling train, moving more than 100 tankers of crude oil from North Dakota to the Eastern seaboard, derailed, spilled oil into the nearby river … then exploded into the aforementioned super-balls of flame near the ironically named Mount Carbon, W.V.. Blood, Sweat and Tears
Blood, Sweat and Tears is the theme for today's show. Not the band, but the reality that those are the main components of life in the US of A in the 21st Century. Too much blood, too many dead or maimed soldiers and civilians thanks to our military incursions, misplaced ire and weapons of mass destruction. Our labor woes since the Bush depression, with a recovery made up of jobs at half the salaries we had before the meltdown, and the vilification of the labor movement that brought about workplace safety, a 5-day/40-hour work week, vacation time, sick leave and [...]
Guns & Roses (or How Oscar Pistorius celebrated Valentines Day)
Perhaps you know Pistorius better like this: Either way, the Olympian was charged last night with the murder of his model/law school graduate/entrepreneur girlfriend. Hint: This is not a good way to celebrate Valentines Day. In other gun news, Wayne LaPierre is spouting off again, this time with a fiery op-ed at The Daily Caller called Stand and Fight. It's alarmist, racist, xenophobid and more, all rolled into one... Today on the show, we talked about all that, including my dramatic reading of some of LaPierre's frighting creed. We also discussed the future of the planet.. Yesterday, 48 environmental [...]
Getting Out The Vote: An Election Eve Radio Special!
Yes, you're in the right place. If you entered the site, it's easy to watch and/or listen to the show tonight. (If you'd rather just listen, click here for the audio stream!) This show came about when my old Air America colleague Richard Greene contacted me and told me about the Energy Independent Congress idea. It's a pretty simple concept: We ask that you vote for ONLY those candidates, Republican and Democratic, who share the vision of CLEAN ENERGY INDEPENDENCE and have the guts to do what is right for our country . . . to create a new, American [...]
Ding Dong Prop H8 is Dead
... for now anyway, as an appeal has already been filed, and a stay is already in place. But it's great news coming out of California as Judge Vaughn Walker (a George H W Bush appointee, no less) ruled that the statute violated a fundamental right of people in love to get married-- he found Prop 8 "unconstitutional under both the due process and equal protection clauses.". Read the ruling for yourself here: Prop 8 Ruling FINAL It's nice to be able to share good news for a change! We'll get into the ruling tonight with FireDogLake's Teddy Partridge and [...]
Up Oil’s Creek Without a Paddle
I generally write this blog after my show, and use it to reiterate a few points and give the info on the content and guests. I'll do all of that... But immediately after the show ended, it was time to tune in to President Obama's speech from the Oval Office regarding the biggest man-made environmental disaster in history. Today, government panel of scientists set up to examine the flow from BP's blown out well said that between 1.47 million and 2.52 million gallons of oil is still gushing from the underwater geyser in the Gulf of Mexico every [...]
Thursday is usually my Friday, but not this week!
**Post updated with tonight's show's audio. Click above to listen!** I do a live program here at Radio or Not Monday through Thursday from 6-8pm ET. I usually take Fridays off to take care of all the personal stuff I neglect during the week... But tomorrow, I will be working, as I once again guest host the Randi Rhodes Show. You'll be able to watch the ustream feed here as usual, but to listen to the audio stream, head over to RandiRhodes.com or stream from one of her affiliate stations. More on that later... As for tonight, we've got an [...]
