“Open your mouth lad, for every voice counts!”

...said the Mayor of Whoville to the shirker named JoJo who, instead of speaking out just played with his yo-yo.  But when he did lend his voice, that's all it took. The whole world was saved by the smallest voice of all. Horton Hears a Who is one of my all time favorite books.  When I awoke this morning and saw that today is Dr. Seuss' birthday, I thought it was time to pull out that book again, as the lesson needs to be learned by everyone who isn't making their voices heard.  I hope you'll listen to today's show, [...]

Another Dispatch from Opposite World

I have a piece I play frequently on my show that welcomes you to "opposite world... where up is down, and in is out".  It's the world in which Speaker Boehner and the rest of the Republicans who are trying to break this nation reside. They ran on JOBS, but the only jobs they seem to want are for the uterus police who will track your pregnancy from conception to birth to make sure nothing happens to the zygote or fetus.  Once the baby is born, they want to make sure there's no one to care for, teach, or protect [...]

Finally The Tables Are Starting to Turn

Yes, I'm still quoting Tracy Chapman.  It's only been 23 years since she wrote "Talkin Bout a Revolution," and finally, the tables are starting to turn. "Poor people gonna rise up and get their share".. I hope that happens. But the first steps have been taken. This weekend, people in every state in the nation took to the streets to say Enough!  Unfortunately, if you watched national or cable news, you didn't see much about it. Scroll down to the next blog post for my video from the USUncut protest at a Bank of America branch in Boca Raton, FL.  [...]

Talkin’ ‘Bout a Revolution

"Finally the tables are starting to turn" -- Tracey Chapman Revolution: a drastic and far-reaching change in ways of thinking and behaving... That's the revolution I'm talking about.  Real people - the hard working, wage earners, parents struggling to feed, clothe and house their children, young people trying to get a foothold in the world, the oppressed, the poor, the newly homeless, the chronically unemployed, the middle class -- are sick and tired of making the sacrifices to pay for the mistakes of the wealthy who keep failing upwards and getting richer. It's time for those with the bulk of [...]

We ARE The World

Remember that star-studded song that raised millions of dollars to fight hunger world wide in the 80s?  The man who brought it all together, music manager Ken Kragen, has signed on to help create Home Aid - a virtual fundraising benefit event to help America's homeless families, children, and veterans, to be held November 18-19 in Nasville and New Orleans during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This morning, I'll be joined by Ken Kragen and David Mathison of Be The Media, executive director of the event, to tell us all about it, and how we can all get involved. [...]

Get Up! Stand Up!

People all over the world are finally awakening from their slumber. They're saying no more to tyrannical rule, oppression, and inequality. Beginning with a fed-up produce vendor in Tunisia who set himself on fire, people are standing up for their rights as part of the human race.  From Tunisia to Egypt, and on to Libya, Bahrain, Iran, Yemen, Iraq... people are empowered, and saying enough is enough. But the protests have been brewing throughout the European Union for a while now. We've watched the masses take to the streets in national strikes in France. And those who've been paying attention [...]

People Have The Power

I guess the old saying about things having to get worse before they get better is playing itself out today.  In the wake of the Republican party attacks on women's rights, the working class, the unemployed, unions, and the rest of what America is supposed to be about; of the revolutions and peoples uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Libya - and France and England - the American people are awakening from their slumber. We now have another reason to love Wisconsin.  They've spurred Americans to get off of our collective asses and stand up for our rights. Paul Krugman [...]

Power to the People!

Never in my life have I had such a strong desire to be in Madison, Wisconsin as I do today! Honestly, I was happy to watch the events in Egypt unfold live on television, and talk about what was happening with my new friend Marwa Rakha - whose child will be born in a country populated by people who've taken part in a peaceful revolution and are heading toward freedom. As we were watching those brave Egyptians take to the streets, I was wondering what it would take to get Americans off of our lazy asses to stand up for [...]

Walk Like a Wisconsinite

Kudos to the good people of Wisconsin for taking to the streets and standing up to their dictatorial new governor who wants to strip collective bargaining rights from state workers.  John Nichols is the Washington correspondent for The Nation, though he lives in Wisconsin.  He wrote about what's happening there, and joined us for a few minutes this morning to tell us about it too. As democracy is spreading virally thought the middle east, I'm hoping that people in the US will take notice of what's happening in Wisconsin and follow their lead. To be continued... And although I'm not [...]
