Who Needs Detention when We’ve Got Jails?

That seems to be the attitude these days -- especially in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings.  Forget protecting these innocent little lives; arrest them and insure that they grow up to be troubled teens and adults.  Quite the vicious circle. I first learned of this new trend three weeks ago, when I read "Students Arrested for Throwing Spitballs", Lollipops" in my local newspaper! The story was as bad as the headline made it sound.  Offenses that used to result in a trip to the principal's office and detention or suspension are now prompting police visits and, often, handcuffs. [...]

Voting Rights…Or Not

Welcome to democracy's nightmare.  Today, it comes in the form of a lawsuit brought by Shelby County, Alabama challenging the Voting Rights Act working its way up to the Supreme Court.  More specifically, the part of the Voting Rights Act under attack today is Section 5 of the law that gives the Justice Department the right to review any changes in voting procedure proposed by a county or state that's covered under this provision before it's enacted. Greg Palast, author of Billionaires and Ballot Bandits, has been covering the subject of voter suppression efforts for years now, and has [...]

Health Care in the US – Government Sanctioned Extortion

I've been calling the for-profit health insurance industry "government sanctioned extortion" for a few years now.  It wasn't until I read Time magazine's cover story this week, "Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills are Killing Us" that I realized that the whole medical industrial complex is complicit in the crime!  And some of the worst offenders are the so-called "non-profit" hospitals that are raking in billions of dollars in profits and their obscenely paid executives. In the article, we learn about the "chargemaster" or the master pricelist from which each hospital compiles the exorbitant bills. No hospital’s chargemaster prices are [...]

And the Award Goes To….

The morning after the Academy Awards, I'll hand out my own! We'll start with Jennifer Lawrence who won the Oscar for Best Actress.  Good for her.  Although she was great in the movie, I just like her.  I like her even more after seeing her flip someone off in the press room after winning last night. My awards from last night also go to Shirley Bassey for her "Goldfinger" performance, and the "We Saw Your Boobs" song.  It was funny.  People need to get a sense of humor. The "No More, Please" award goes to the red carpet crap. [...]

It’s Money that Matters

Today on the show, we talked about money.  Well, the real topics were campaign finance reform and the Oscars... but it all boils down to dollars and cents. The Supreme Court is set to hear another case involving campaign contributions.  McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission is being called Citizens United 2.0, as the GOP wants to lift the limits on the aggregate amount of money an individual can contribute directly to candidates and to their party.  I spoke about it and the progress made to undo the Citizens United damage with a constitutional amendment with Move To Amend's David Cobb. Note [...]

Countdown to Cuts, Climate Change, Media Madness and Drones

As you can see from the picture above, the GOP has taken to calling the cuts mandated by the Sequester "Obamaquester".  But this slide from a John Boehner-delivered Power Point presentation appears to show that it was the Speaker who wanted it! At the Daily Beast, John Avlon reports  I happened to come across an old email that throws cold water on House Republicans’ attempts to call this “Obama’s Sequester.” It’s a PowerPoint presentation that Boehner’s office developed with the Republican Policy Committee and sent out to the Capitol Hill GOP on July 31, 2011. Intended to explain the [...]

President’s Day Two-Fer

Yep, it's another double header today, so not much time for a lengthy post... you'll just have to listen:) This afternoon on the Randi Rhodes Show, I'll speak with the Amazing Kreskin (yes, he's still alive), Forbes' token liberal Rick Ungar, and Howie Klein will update us on how the solar panels on his house are working out for him, plus lots more.... Guns & Roses (or How Oscar Pistorius celebrated Valentines Day)

Perhaps you know Pistorius  better like this: Either way, the Olympian was charged last night with the murder of his model/law school graduate/entrepreneur girlfriend.  Hint: This is not a good way to celebrate Valentines Day. In other gun news, Wayne LaPierre is spouting off again, this time with a fiery op-ed at The Daily Caller called Stand and Fight.   It's alarmist, racist, xenophobid and more, all rolled into one... Today on the show, we talked about all that, including my dramatic reading of some of LaPierre's frighting creed. We also discussed the future of the planet..  Yesterday,  48 environmental [...]
