Home sweet home

Dear Everyone, For years I was housed at The Political Carnival as one of its founders, editors, and of course, writers. But things change (please follow that link for the whole story). I am so thrilled to be part of Radio Or Not full time now! Nicole and I have worked together for so many years, it was a natural move and a great fit. Living at her place seems more like moving back home than moving away from my TPC home of seven-plus years. I'll be posting my usual snark here at Laffy's Place from time to time, and [...]

Women Vote!

Welcome to August 26, 2014 - the 94th anniversary of the certification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States. Although it's dubbed "Women's Equality Day," that's actually a misnomer, as women still have no constitutional right to equality. Although the Equal Rights Amendment was written by Alice Paul in 1923, it has yet to be ratified. But women do have the right to vote. And yes, women do vote! That was the focus of today's "Gliberal Goddesses" gathering. Every other Tuesday morning, GottaLaff of The Political Carnival, Amy Simon of She's History, [...]

The Vagina Dialogues (5/1/2014)

If you put three women together on a radio show with no rules and no limitations other than to talk like real women do, what would you call it? I actually liked Laffy's suggestion of The Vagina Dialogues, but Amy Simon didn't. But the three of us, GottaLaff of The Political Carnival, Amy Simon of She's History, and I spent most of the second hour of the show simply shooting the shit about life. We'll try it again, though I don't know what it'll be called. And we'll invite other women into the mix too. The idea to do something [...]

Whining About Women, and Song (04/23/2014)

Jon Stewart almost nailed it last night when he ended his segment on the right wing double standard for women by saying "It's alright to be a pussy as long as you've got a dick." But he left off the last four words that would have made that statement 100% correct: "if you're a Republican." Susie Madrak of Crooks & Liars sent me this clip to discuss when she joined in during the first hour of the show today.... Their double standard really is astounding. They demean Dianne Feinstein and Hillary Clinton as "too emotional" - yet applaud the [...]

It’s International Women’s Day. Do You Know Where Your ERA Is?

March 22 will mark 40 years since Congress ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. Unfortunately, we fell three states short of the number required to amend the Constitution to insure that no one in this country would or could be discriminated against due to their sex.  And here we are in 2012 with a war being waged by the Republican party against women. Since today is International Women's Day, I invited Roberta Francis - Chair of the ERA task force of the National Council of Women's Organizations - on the show to bring us op to day.  Although you likely haven't [...]

On Women, Florida, Teachers, Unions and NPR…

We are women, hear us roar. But not in the history books that have likely been written by men. March is Women's History Month!  We have a month, but we still don't have an equal rights amendment. All the great things that women have done to move our nation forward is rarely reported or taught. Until now, that is. My friend Amy Simon calls herself a "cultural HERstorian."  She's been obsessed with the lack of attention paid to the role women have played throughout our nation's history, and decided to do something about it.  The result is now a one [...]
