F Words: FOIA, Ferguson, FCC, Facts

Nicole kicks off Thanksgiving week with a look at the news- from the fight over immigration reform to the wait for a Grand Jury decision from Ferguson. Howie Klein joins in to talk about alternatives to Hillary Clinton, and Vice News' Jason Leopold reports on Ferguson, the CIA's torture report and the FCC's cozy relationship with the industry they're supposed to be regulating.

A Bucket of Ice Water

When Homer Simpson joins in, you know you've gone viral. Although the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised awareness about the disease and a lot of money, there's so much we still don't know about it - thus the need for a campaign like this one. Homer challenged Donald Trump who actually dumped water on that thing on his head, proving that his hair really looks like that! I hope that dump also included a hefty donation! My favorite is still this 2-year old I'm pretty confident in guessing that most people didn't know what ALS was before this month [...]

The News Has Been Canceled…and That’s the Way it Is

There is no more news. There's infotainment and speculation and opinion and lots of made-up shit all masquerading as "news," but make no mistake, the news has been canceled. Today's "news" casts on TV are anything but the objective, fact-based reports on the day's events they used to be. A Washington Post obituary of "60 Minutes" Creator Don Hewitt gets to the reason that the actual news can no longer be found on your television set: "60 Minutes" creator Don Hewitt, 86, who transformed television journalism by showing that news programs could generate money, and who helped make TV an [...]

Yes, We’re Live Today!

The end of the year is approaching.  It's that dead week between Christmas and New Years that's usually dead time in the media.  All of the "progressive talk" shows are playing repeats, except for the Randi Rhodes Show which has me!  So, be sure to tune in from 3-6 ET this afternoon as we continue our look back at 2012, today hitting on the War on Women.  She's History's Amy Simon will join in with some highlights. We're also on top of whatever news is being made.  Right now, President Obama and the Senate is returning to DC to [...]

The Other Abu Zubaidah

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120530_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_The_Other_Zabaida.mp3{/play} Podcast: Play in new window Imagine for a moment that you have a brother who you haven't spoken with in many years who turns out to be a suspect in a terrorist plot.  That would suck, right?  Imagine further that because of your brother's alleged actions, you were detained for two years, then forced to become a government informant, made to infiltrate houses of worship to find information on people with whom you are in no way associated. It seems that that is exactly what happened to Hesham Abu-Zubaida, the brother of Hani Mohamed Abu-Zubaida [...]

RIP First Amendment

Listen to this episode: {play}http://traffic.libsyn.com/radioornot/20120517_Nicole_Sandler_Show_-_RIP_our_First_Amendment.mp3{/play} Podcast: Play in new window I've spent the past few days lamenting the loss of our first amendment.  In case you've forgotten, it goes like this: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. It pains me to put it down in black and white, but it's dead on all levels. As we discussed earlier in the week, [...]

Laughter and Tears

That picture is just one of many screens you'll see at EtchASketchMittRomney.com. It all started yesterday morning when our pal John Fugelsang asked Mitt Romney's communications director a question on Soledad O'Brien's morning show on CNN: My buddy John Fugelsang, who happens to be a brand new dad (see below) took time out between a return appearance on CNN- he's there all next week too, and filming a role in a movie, to chat with us about all that's happened recently, including the arrival of  Henry Jack Fugelsang... The show started with an update from Truthout's Jason Leopold about the [...]

It’s Springtime in America

The Occupy Wall Street movement began in the fall. But with spring blossoming yesterday, it seems certain that the uprising will bloom in bigger ways. Alison Kilkenny is a NYC based reporter, covering the movement for In These Times and The Nation, as well as Citizen Radio, which she co-hosts with her brilliantly funny husband, Jamie Kilstein.  She joins us in the first hour today to bring us up to date on #OWS at six months. It's still March - which means it's Women's History Month.  Time for a visit from my dear friend Amy Simon, cultural HERstorian and writer& [...]
