DC Date Night

Who will  your Congressional representatives will be sitting with tonight? Methinks that more attention will be focused on who is sitting with whom than what President Obama is saying as he delivers his State of the Union address tonight. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing... Although I don't expect any great revelations from our president, I am heartened to learn that he will not endorse the idea of raising the age for Social Security or making cuts to Medicare, as his "deficit commission" recommended.  We can expect lots of moving forward (lean forward?) talk.  Perhaps those are the words [...]

99ers are People Too

When we refer to the growing group of people who've exhausted their unemployment benefits as 99ers, it makes it all too easy to remember that they are actual human beings rather than just statistics. I started the helpthe99ers.com website after speaking with a few of those actual people while guest-hosting The Randi Rhodes Show over the holidays.  One of the first to post when I started the site was Bud Myers, an unemployed casino bartender in Las Vegas. Here's what he posted originally: I'm a 55 year old male and have worked since I was 14 – but I was [...]

The 3000 Pound Elephant in the Room

Amid the calls for civility in discourse, the right continues to defend their use of violent rhetoric, claiming it was not the cause of Jared Loughners murderous rampage in Tucson. The question that needs to be asked, over and over again, is "When is enough enough?"  Is it when the next crazed gunman does site Glenn Beck's classroom teaching or Sarah Palin's instructions to "Don't Retreat - Reload!" as their prime motivation?  After more have been gunned down and innocent children are lying bloody in the street? The right got so defensive in the wake of the AZ shootings because [...]

We’ve Come A Long Way Baby, or Have We?

This afternoon on The Randi Rhodes Show, I'll be joined by a couple of guests who'll reflect on the progress made in 2010 by the LGBT community and women. The unflinching activism of the group GetEqual is widely credited for making the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell a reality. Heather Cronk, managing director of GetEqual will join us to talk about how they got it done, and what's next. What strides have women made this year? We're on the cusp of 2011, and still don't have an Equal Rights Amendment.  But we do have a third woman on the [...]

Counting down to 2011

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas holiday. Personally, I couldn't let go of the stories shared with us on Wed and Thursday on The Randi Rhodes Show, so I spent the Christmas weekend putting together a website to help.  Please check it out at www.helpthe99ers.com, and use it according to your needs and abilities. I'm taking a bit of a holiday from my show this week, sharing some of the highlights from the music years of my radio career.  This morning we listened to interviews with and performances by Graham Parker, Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders), Jackson Browne, Natalie Merchant and [...]

Do Unto Others…

Isn't that one of the most important teachings of Christianity? Treat others as you'd like them to treat you? It's the Christmas season when, supposedly, millions around the world honor the birth of Christ... buy practicing overindulgent and crass commercialism.  That's not the way it's supposed to be. By way of full disclosure, I'm Jewish-- a non-practicing Jew at that, but I think I'm more "christian" than most of those gift-hoarding hypocrites who only look out for their own best interests and don't give a damn about their neighbors who are truly in need. Yes, I'm a bit bitter.  I [...]

The Very Good and the Very Bad

This morning on my show, we'll look at the bittersweet feelings so many of us are experiencing at the end of the year. The past few weeks have been an incredible whirlwind for everyone paying attention to the what our elected officials are doing in Washington.  Sadly, not enough Americans do... the majority is happy to plod along, caring only about who dances or sings well, or what idiotic woman will accept a marriage proposal from a himbo on a reality show. But I digress, again.  The last three weeks have been truly historic.  As President Obama said while taking [...]

Wednesday, Round 2

Getting ready for today's Randi Rhodes Show, with lots to talk about! Of course, we started the day with a loud bang (and John McCain's still complaining about it) as President Obama signed the law repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell. Now, that's the holiday spirit! But there are still a few bills dangling as the GOP Senators keep complaining they have to work!  We should get some resolution today on the START Treaty, which made it through a cloture vote yesterday with the 67 votes needed for ratification of a treaty! The big mystery at this hour is the fate [...]

Ding Dong DADT is Dead!

We witnessed history this morning, as President Obama asserted that all men and women are created equal, and signed the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell into Law! As I write this post (delayed because I was watching the ceremony live), I'm playing back my interview with Lt. Dan Choi, recorded this summer at Netroots Nation. I have no guests booked for this morning's show, as I knew we'd be celebrating this huge step forward for civil rights. I'm not sure what else today's show will bring... we'll see what happens over the next couple of hours.  You [...]

Twas the Tues Before Christmas…

I attempted to write a clever rhyming thing here, but am running out of time before today's show!  Or, I should say, before the first of today's two shows. Since I wasn't here yesterday, we'll talk with Nicole Belle of Crooks and Liars, for our weekly gab-fest "Fools on the Hill."  Nicole watches the Sunday talking head shows so we don't have to.  Here's what she's bringing us today: This is always a very busy time of the year for Congress.  These last few days of the lame duck session of the 111th Congress are absolutely packed full of legislation [...]
