Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right

SULOME ANDERSON'He calls me neshama, I call him habibi. Love doesn't speak the language of occupation #JewsAndArabsRefuseToBeEnemies,'Sulome Anderson tweeted. If only the so-called leaders could be taken out of the equation, the people of the world might actually have a shot at world peace! But only a shot because there are still citizens throughout the world who insist on placing all of the blame for this mess on one side or the other. As an American atheist of Jewish descent, I still consider myself a Jew - with all the history to comes with that heritage. I have [...]

Tackling the Tough Issues

As if things weren't bad enough before I left for 10 days... As Jon Stewart asked upon his return, "What could happen in two weeks?" Famous last words.. Well, Jon Stewart attempted to cover the Israel-Gaza story with objectivity and, for his troubles, he got attacked - from both sides! I hearken back to those words of wisdom spoken by every mother to every child, "Two wrongs don't make a right." What's going on in Israel and Gaza is unacceptable. Yes, Israel has a right to defend itself, and Hamas' practice of storing its weapons where civilians live and play [...]

How I Spent My Summer Vacation (Part 2)

I'm home after 10 days on the road to cover the American Federation of Teachers convention in Los Angeles and Netroots Nation '14 in Detroit. It was actually anything but a vacation, but I do thrive on the action, and there was plenty of that. To recap the trip, all you need do is listen to the shows from the past week or so. (Find them here, here, here, here and my interview with the amazing Rev. Dr. William Barber is posted as a standalone interview here) Now that I'm back home, I have the luxury of sitting back [...]

Friday Morning Live at Netroots Nation ’14 Detroit

Yes! I got to interview the founder of Moral Mondays, Rev. Dr. William Barber last night. It was a very long day, but I would have waited all night to speak with the man who is inspiring people to come together in a Moral Fusion Movement around the subjects of  voting rights, women's rights, immigrants rights, labor rights and more. Dr. Barber spelled out the Moral Agenda, which includes  Pro labor, anti poverty policy educational equality health care for all fairness in our criminal justice system the call to hook up and organize around protecting and expanding the rights mentioned [...]

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

OK, it wasn't a vacation, but I spent the last few days with members of the American Federation of Teachers. at their bi-annual convention here in Los Angeles. I had no idea the American Federation of Teachers represented so many of the people whose work is in helping others until I arrived on Friday. But I sat in the opening session, with the powerful Rev. Dr. William Barber (more about him in a moment) and the electric president of the AFT Randi Weingarten, and saw a huge contingent of nurses waving their flags. I learned that the AFT, whose numbers [...]

Final Day at #AFT14

The 2014 AFT convention wraps up today, and I'm thrilled that I was able to be here to cover it. After all, our future depends on these people who, in many cases, spend more times with our children than their parents do. But it's not only teachers represented by the American Federation of Teachers. The AFT also represents nurses and other healthcare workers, school staff other than teachers, public defenders and other public sector employees. I overheard someone waiting in line the other day suggesting they change the name of the AFT to the AFP - American Federation of [...]

Saturday Afternoon Live from #AFT14

The show will also stream in a loop tomorrow on the Radio or Not audio stream until Monday morning, when we'll do one more live show from the convention.*** Yesterday was a busy day here at the American Federation of Teachers convention in Los Angeles. Good Morning from the West Coast

I awoke this morning in beautiful downtown Los Angeles. I'm here to cover the American Federation of Teachers convention before heading to Detroit for Netroots Nation. I'll find out all the details for the AFT convention later this morning, and will update this post with a working schedule. That said, there will be no live show this morning. However, since it's Friday, I thought we'd do a special double-header Flashback Friday edition. Each Friday, I dig into my radio archives and pull out an interview from my music radio days. Today, we go back to 1999 and 2000 to speak [...]

Guilty Until Proven Innocent

The scales of justice are horribly unbalanced. Ever since learning about the fate of Troy Davis, a man who was convicted of murder and, despite new evidence that would have exonerated him, was executed anyway. I started learning about The Innocence Project, co-founded by Barry Scheck (of the OJ Simpson trial fame), an organization "dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted criminals through DNA testing, and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice." Today, I spoke with Mark Godsey is the Carmichael Professor of Law and Director of the Ohio Innocence Project at the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He serves on [...]
