awake the state

The Florida legislative session begins today in Tallahassee and, like all Floridians, I hope that common sense will prevail. Sadly, it hasn’t in prior years, so it’s time to get involved.

Today, I’ll join in the Awake Broward rally – one of dozens of rallies happening around the state marking the opening day of 2015 session.

Yesterday, Florida actually got something right. Here in Broward County, where I live, for the first time, a marijuana defendant used medical marijuana as a defense, and won. We’re making progress….

Big Hillary Clinton news broke overnight, courtesy of the NY Times. In Michael Schmidt’s article, we learned that during her four-year run as Secretary of State, Mrs. Clinton never had a state department, government issued email account; she did all her official business using her personal email address.

As is always the case, there are at least two sides to the story, In this fascinating article I found on Medium, Clay Johnson reminds us

Let’s be clear, that personal email was probably far more secure than her state.gov email account. The State Department’s email system has been compromised for months. It’s highly likely that it’s been compromised since forever: remember, during her tenure, Wikileaks released the State Department’s classified communications.

And his “mic drop” moment

One final thought: I’d imagine Secretary Clinton at some point emailed the White House. I made the mistake of emailing the White House from my personal account once (!) during my term, and managed to get back a nastygram from Counsel about it. How or why didn’t the White House tell Hillary to use her official .gov email account?

It could be that they knew the entire classified and unclassified email system was compromised and decided that the smartest thing to do was for her to use her personal email instead.

Touché. To be continued, I’m sure.

The big news today was the speech before a joint session of Congress (minus some) by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Although we listened to some of it during the show, we skipped most.

But I did discuss the problems inherent with the way the speech came about with my friend, Joel Silberman, during the first hour of the show. Joel’s is a voice of reason who always seems to break reasonably through the noise. No wonder he’s so good at his work as a media and message strategist and trainer. Hopefully he’ll be joining us on a regular basis here on the show.

Ryan Grim joined in from Huffington Post to talk about his latest investigation. He and Paul Blumenthal looked at Citizens United five years later and its effect on our political process in a must-read piece, “The Inside Story of how Citizens United Has Changed Washington Lawmaking.”

And although you can always find Ryan’s work at HuffPost, you should sign up for his “Bad News Newsletter” so you don’t miss a thing… (it’s where I found out that Russ Feingold was running to re-take his old Senate seat in 2016!)

I’ll be back tomorrow, talking with Susie Madrak and Ari Berman, and about whatever the day brings us, radio or not!
