NS Saudi bcast

Nicole Sandler with soldier Sidney Pittman in Dharhan, Saudi Arabia – Dec. 18, 1990

Yes, I really did go to Saudi Arabia. I was on the ground in Dharhan for just about four hours on Dec. 18, 1990, as producer of the Mark & Brian Show.  It was a month before the official start of “Operation Desert Storm”.

Last night, while going through some boxes in search of another blast from my past (more about that in a bit), I came across my typewritten journal of that trip. I’ll be posting the text and more pictures separately as soon as I can. In the meantime you can listen, as I read it aloud on the show today.

It’s particularly poignant now; it’s 25 years later and we’re still there fighting.

Digby joined me for a brief discussion about the Groundhog Day aspect of this, again.

We lightened things up in the second hour of today’s show with Amy Simon.  The 50 Shades of Grey hype is impossible to avoid, but I saw this coming 22 years ago!

The newspaper clippings I was searching through the boxes for were from June of 1993.  An article from the Orange County Register tells about how a 10-year old, obscure book written by Anne Rice under the pen name A.N. Roquelaure, The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, was suddenly sold out all over Southern California and entered the LA Times Paperback Bestsellers list at #4.

There was more, but you’ll just have to listen…

And I’ll be back tomorrow to wrap up the week, radio or not.
