CNN Officially Jumps the Shark

Poor CNN.  So desperately trying to find an audience they jump into bed with the tea baggers, so to speak.  How do they not understand that the tea party is even "less popular than much maligned groups like 'atheists' and 'Muslims.'" I promise you that I will not spend as much time watching or re-capping the multitude of these "who can out-crazy the other" so-called debates, which we'll be subjected to once a week for the foreseeable future.  But I just couldn't resist this one - billed as the "Tea Party Debate"!  If ever one of these side shows was [...]

On Life and Death

It was a bit of each this morning on my show. It's been a long day.  After doing my show (podcast here) this morning, I hopped in the car and drove up to the West Palm Beach studios where Randi Rhodes does her show, and filled in for her. I usually podcast my show within an hour or so after it airs live but, obviously, wasn't here to do it today until now.  But the blog title pretty much sums it up. LIFE:    I spoke with Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World.  He was one of [...]

Too Much News For Just One Show Today

So, it's another double-header today. We'll start with my regular show this morning... We'll talk  the debt ceiling debate - with clips from Friday's dueling press conferences with Obama and Boehner.  Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World, who was one of many Christian leaders who met with President Obama on Wednesday to implore him to protect programs for the needy And Frank Schaeffer - whose latest book is Sex, Mom and God, joins in to talk about his new piece up at AlterNet: "Christian Jihad? Why We Should Worry About Right-Wing Terror Attacks Like Norway's in the [...]

Et Tu Obama? – An Open Letter to the President

Dear President Obama, We get that the Republican Party wants to end Medicare and Social Security. We understand that theirs is the party of every man, woman and child for him/herself.  But we thought you were a Democrat and, as such, believed in our country's social safety net, at the very least.  According to a NY Times story that greeted us this morning, that's now in question: Mr. Obama, who is to meet at the White House with the bipartisan leadership of Congress in an effort to work out an agreement to raise thefederal debt limit, wants to move well [...]

Countdown to The Rapture!

My boyfriend David and I were in Ft. Lauderdale the other day, having lunch at the delicious East Coast Burrito Factory when we spotted an interesting billboard.  It was one of the big, expensive ones, and it looked like this: I was intrigued, so I wrote down the url, and looked it up.  It turns out, I recognized the name "Atheist Bob" as someone who used to call into my morning show on WINZ, and reached out to invite him on the show to talk about this.  Atheist Bob Senatore is the president of the group Florida Atheists and Secular [...]

The Post-Friday Budgetary Blues

As the new week begins, I'm still reeling from the events that transpired on Friday. As the country was waiting anxiously to see how the budget standoff would end Friday night, I was sitting in an attorney's office, signing away my rights to my house.  The house that my father bought after my mother died, where he lived his final dozen or so years in misery as a quadriplegic, is no longer my burdon. I bought my sister out of her share of the house after my father died ... at the height of the market.  The house that my [...]

Privatize This!

"It's not a budget. This is a cause."  A direct quote from Republican Paul Ryan, the Eddie Munster lookalike who heads up the House Budget Committee on his budget... er... cause. The thing that everyone needs to be screaming/blogging/talking about is the fact that Ryan's budget cause would do to Medicare what George W. Bush wanted to do to Social Security - kill it!  W failed in that quest.  Thank goodness.  Because if he had been successful in privatizing Social Security, he would have killed it - along with millions of seniors who would have lost everything when the banksters [...]
