Will the Gun Madness Ever End?

Before yesterday's hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee on gun violence began, a standoff in Alabama had already entered its second day.  A gunman boarded a school bus, killed the driver and took a five year old hostage where they are still holed up in an underground bunker. While the hearing was in progress, a gunman killed one man and injured at least two others in a shooting in Phoenix, Arizona. The day before the hearing, a 15-year old Chicago girl was killed by a by a gunshot while she huddled under a shelter in a Chicago park to [...]

Guns ‘n Borders

At least we're talking! The nation is finally talking about two important issues: comprehensive immigration reform and sensible gun safety laws. My show begins at 10am ET, which is when today Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on Preventing Gun Violence started this morning.  The first to speak was former Congresswoman and gunshot victim Gabrielle Giffords.  We carried her brief but very moving statement live. Her husband, Mark Kelly also spoke So did NRA chief Wayne LaPierre, but I won't post the video of his statement here. He spouted the same bullshit he's been spewing as long as we've known his name. [...]

Grayson, Guns and GottaLaff (and Gambling too)

Congressman Alan Grayson and his twin sons at the swearing in of the 113th Congress Congressman Alan Grayson was my guest this morning and I was once again reminded of how lucky we are to have him in the House of Representatives. We talked about his great floor speeches, the "Medicare We Can All Buy In To" bill he introduced in the 111th Congress, and his willingness to stand up for what's right, among other things. The Political Carnival's GottaLaff joined in during the second hour, as she does every Tuesday.  A list of and links to the stories [...]

In hour two, as we do every Tuesday morning, I got together with GottaLaff of The Political Carnival to talk about some of the week's news... Forgive me for the brevity of today's post... all the details can be heard by listening to the show .... as I just realized that Chanukah begins tonight (I thought it was tomorrow), so off shopping I must [...]

On Civility

Last night in Tucson, President Obama reminded us why we voted for him. He struck the right chords in a brilliant speech that made us truly feel like an American family 300 million strong. He called for civility, because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to our challenges as a nation. I agree, wholeheartedly. However, calls for civility should not be confused with silence on the lack of civility. This morning, I tweeted the question "Does POTUS' call for civility mean we shouldn't criticize Speaker Boehner for attending a RNC fundraiser instead of [...]
