Homegrown Female Genital Mutilation In the U.S. Skyrockets

This is a number that should induce massive gender-neutral outrage. According to draft statistics in a CDC study released to The Guardian and offered at Raw Story for our communal horror, the reported amount of women and girls mutilated and [surviving] victims of FGM in America has shot up from 168,000 to 513,000. The population of my native state of Vermont is less than that without the seasonal flocks of second-homers. From the article, an excerpt on why the timing is so meaningful. Going to Pot

On November 4, Florida may become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana. I certainly never think of FloriDUH as a trend leader and, in this case, we'd be in the middle of the pack. Flashback Friday

What a week this has been! I can't say I'm sorry to see it end. This morning on the show, we flashed back to last week and to February 2000. Last week was easy. I flew to Detroit for Netroots Nations following a few days in Los Angeles for the American Federation of Teachers convention. Although I did live shows from Netroots on Thursday and Friday, I recorded a bunch of interviews on Saturday, some of which we heard earlier in the week. Today, we began with Mike Rogers of Raw Story and Netroots Connect, and a conversation about almost [...]

Also on the show tonight…

In addition to speaking with Bob Ferguson of Oxfam America, I'll be joined by Larisa Alexandrovna, managing editor of investigative news for Raw Story. We'll talk a bit about what's happening in Haiti, and she'll also fill us in on a disturbingly sad story about former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter. It was a busy week in the war against prohibition. In our second hour tonight, I'll be joined by Judge Jim Gray, retired CA Superior Court judge who's a speaker for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, and author of  Why Our Drug Laws Have Failed And What We Can Do [...]
