Welcome to Education Nation Propaganda Week, complete with its own Hollywood blockbuster! Won’t Back Down is the latest offering from the powers that want to kill public education and replace it with a privatized, for-profit system that will not help our kids.
NBC’s stations are in the midst of their manufactured-news “Education Nation” week which pushes the privatization idea and presents it as if it the idea of moving education into the private sector was the right thing to do (it isn’t). Last night, I actually saw Rev. Al Sharpton – who should know bettter – interviewing some flack from the for-profit University of Phoenix – which stands for everything that is wrong with the movement to privatize public education. Interestingly enough, that video is not on the Politics Nation/MSNBC website. Embarrassed much?
It turns out that the University of Phoenix is one of the sponsors of the made-for-tv event. Can you say “conflict of interest”? I sure can.
This morning, I invited Olivia Leirer, communications director of NY Communities for Change to come on the show to talk about the hoopla surrounding the film “Won’t Back Down” and how it pushes the ALEC legislation known as the Parent Trigger (something we talked about on this program last week).
Learn more about it by reading “Won’t Back Down Film Pushes ALEC Parent Trigger Proposal” written by Mary Bottari of the Center for Media and Democracy.
I was thrilled to have my old friend Joe Garcia on the show today, who’s been very busy running for Congress from Florida’s new 26th district. If we elect Joe we win twice – once by having him in Congress, and again by getting rid of the scandal master David Rivera.
And finally, as we do each Tuesday morning, it was time to Shoot the Shit with GottaLaff of The Political Carnival! And she brought a new Blunt! with her today….
