When Your Child Gets Hurt Away From Home

I just got back to town late last night from taking my daughter to sleep away camp.  I got her settled in to her cabin, met the counselors and some of the other girls, and drove the five hours home, missing her already. As I was preparing for today's show - around 45 minutes before showtime - the phone rang.  It was the camp nurse.  After telling me not to worry, she said that they had just called an ambulance!  When my heart slowed down enough for me to hear her over the loud thumping, she explained that Alison passed [...]

We Don’t Negotiate With Terrorists

I'm so sick of the dysfunction in this country today.  A broken media that accentuates the slimy and salacious in their quest for ratings over news and integrity.  A government so broken that elected officials are more concerned about appeasing their wealthy benefactors than in representing the people they were elected to help. We're setting sail to the place on the map from which no one has ever returned Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool by the light of the crosses that burned. Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace and [...]

Debt Clock vs Cost of War Clock

Today, we've heard so much about the debt ceiling.  Yes, it's high and needs to be dealt with. But you don't do it by cutting social programs for the neediest among us. Perhaps if the wealthiest among us and corporations paid their fair share of taxes, we wouldn't be in this mess. The Gross National Debt So, there's your National Debt. The other place we could slow that clock down a whole lot is by doing away with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. See what we're blowing there? #costOfWarTotal { text-align: center; width: 270px; font-weight: bold; } #costOfWarTotal_Total { [...]

Monday Morning Musings

We're at the beginning of a new week... The space shuttle just launched with Gaby Giffords' husband aboard, and the Sunday talk shows had an 8:1 ratio of Republicans to Democrats yesterday. Of course, we'll talk with Nicole Belle about those Sunday shows in hour two... more on that in a bit. Thursday was May 12, and the On May 12 coalition had their big day of action, but you'd never know it if you looked for coverage of the huge numbers of people who marched on Wall Street.  Thank goodness for Allison Kilkenny -journalist and co-host of Citizen Radio, [...]

This is What Democracy Looks Like

You can find it online, but not on your TV.  As Bruce Springsteen said, "57 channels and nothing on" -- except now it's 557 channels, and still no coverage of the huge protests that went on this weekend in Wisconsin and other cities here in the US.  But I have a feeling if this was an astroturf rally comprised of people sporting teabags and misspelled hate filled signs, we'd be inundated with made-up details. Thank God for the interwebs.  The above picture came courtesy of the Political Carnival.  Live streaming of the massive protests was provided by The Uptake.  (An [...]
